Anyone else DEEPLY disturbed by the bashing of the Japaense guy?

I've seen Donnie Brasco probably 10 times and the scene where they bash the Japanese guy in the tiolet of the Japanese restaurant never gets any easier for me. Everytime I mention this to others who have seen this film, I get the impression that nobody else is as affected by the scene as me. Anyone else find that scene DEEPLY disturbing?

reply

well i dont like japanese guys too much
and i loved that scene

say 'ello to my little friend!

reply

Why would that scene disturb you?! I've seen many films that have much worse in them...

On the other hand, posting this thread compliments the movie... Because of the great acting and effects it makes you feel 'disturbed.' A great reaction for films!

I laughed my ass off!

But the Billy Batts beating still is king!

reply

I don't know about any of you, but if I have a bunch of tough New York guys telling me that they're not going to take off their shoes, I think I'd just let it go. I feel bad that the waiter got such a wicked ass kicking over something so insignificant, but why was he being so stubborn to begin with?

I won't conform to what I see in you.

reply

Lol disturbing? Comon guys I know 1000 other scenes in a lot of other movies that are worse e.g the beating in casino. Comon cant you guys handle a little violence?

reply

Yeah, the baseball bat beating scene from Casino occured to me too when i read the first post. Now that's a disturbing scene!

The scene in Donnie Brasco where (SPOILER!) they kill Sonny Red is also quite disturbing. Speaks something of the quality of the movie that you almost feel sorry for the guys who were gonna do the exact same thing to Sonny Black's crew in the first place. This is one helluva great film.

i dont think any of you have acknowledged that it is simply a case of japanese tradition and many other japanese people in the same position would not allow shoes inside under the same circumstances either, ethics, tradition, culture and maybe he wasnt entirely "smart" but he sure did put his heart down on the line for what he truly believed in and as the mafia believe they are supremicists did him over for it not nice but just life and very lucky for brasco... extremely lucky, unlike the waitor he would have died a death which i would be DEEPLY disturbed by learning of in comparison to the beating of a good but unwise man.

reply

They should have just walked out and gone to a place where they do not need to remove their shoes. Actually, tradition or not, forcing people to remove footwear is irritating and I myself detest going to such places.
In India, due to unhygienic living conditions and peoples stinginess in employing cleaners, lots of places including clinics/hospitals and computer based offices do not permit customers/patients/employees to wear shoes inside their facilities. This is blackmail because if you need to see a doctor, you are forced to comply to such absurd self-made rules. And this is not for the sake of following any tradition, but simply to save money. In this case, I would like to do exactly what they did to the Japanese waiter in this movie.

2 bombs were not enough

well said, for some i guess not.

reply

tell you what......let's pretend that Sonny and his gang weren't mafia and the waiter wasn't asian.
let's say the gang was a black gangstas and the waiter was also black.
or maybe the gang was skinheads and the waiter was a jew.
what we're takling about here is a gang of thugs beating a defenseless person. i don't care what the waiter did he didn't deserve to be almost killed.

WHAT'S NEXT?

All the ignorant teenagers defending gangsters because they're "cool" make me laugh. I wouldn't say it was a disturbing scene, violence doesn't really affect me, but it was a scene which made me dislike the characters intensely.

Sensitive boys that can't stand he beat somebody up that's yellow GTFO =>
Ofc he had to think it was racist in stead of just an idiot that didn't knew that he shouldn't insist. Love how they to show the korean / american hate but that was just excuse for his hidden tape. Well done donnie and well done at beating him after he refused your hand and still had attitude.
Mb the yellow man was a wise guy? Not a good one tho :p.
read like half the comments till i came along some people who were writing books as comment.

timmyderuysscher.....I'm guessing your IQ to be about 60? He wasn't Korean, but Japanese. It has only been stated about 15 times so far (not to mention in the original post). Yes!! I was very disturbed by this scene -- horrified -- but it was important to the story to show how trapped (as I see it) Pistone was and how he had to go along with a stupid, brutal beating in order to keep from being exposed. I saw reluctance at first on Johnny Depp's face, though it changed to savagery and I guess that was the point -- that he ended up getting into it.

I found it hard to believe the guys bought his story. After the Sopranos, you've gotta think any time someone won't take off an article of clothing, massive alarm bells go off for everyone else.
