To be fair to the guy, he's american and i'd say the n.ireland accent is one of the hardest accents to do. We find it so easy to do the american and english accents because we hear them on tv every day. Even southern irish people have trouble with our accent. I just watched man about dog, and the main character who is from dublin had a terrible belfast accent, he was meant to be from west belfast and sounded more derry than anything!
I'm from belfast but i have loads of friends from down and Brad sounded nothing like them. fair play to him for making an effort tho!
I am Jack's smirking revenge.

its almost right up there folks with The Day After Tomorrow having Banbridge spelt as 'Bambridge' in the DVDs subtitles.
I want to all men!
hi matt, sorry, that was ignorent of me! i guess i just assumed that it was in cookstown.
i don't believe in violence, i belive the IRA is weak, and they will pay the price, for the things they have done.
was it just me or did he not say AYE a LOT!!! never once said yes or year, other than that i think he did a pretty good job.
shareWell i would say AYE quite a lot, if i was in a conversation with someone and was agreeing with them! but thats just me!
shareI too am from Belfast and say 'yeah' or 'aye' a lot as well.......or theres 'know what a mean hey?' from Ballymena.
LOL!
I want to all men!
Northern Irish is difficult to do because it features a sound that doesn't exist in the American accent--a kind of flattened "u" similer to the umlaut in German.
They really had that line about the "bogside" on ER? I'm an American, and even *I* know that's a mistake.
Just to add:
Northern Irish is probably THE single most difficult accent to emulate in the English language. The dialect is bound by a complicated set of linguistic rules whereby vowels change pronunciation depending on which consonants.
For instance, in American and most British English, the word "daze" rhymes with "days." In Belfast, however, these words do not rhyme. "Days' is pronounced "dehz," while "daze" sound like "DEE-uhz."
The only non-Irish actor who was truly able to pull off the accent was Daniel Day-Lewis. Almost all other attempts have failed.
I'm Northern Irish and I say "aye" a lot to.
His accent wasn't perfect although I was expecting something far worse from what others told me.
I think he was reasonable and at least give him credit for trying.
Yeah - Daniel Day-Lewis was authentic. The best performance for me though, was John Voight in movie "The General". I watched the entire thing and thought he was Irish (I'm from Dublin myself). Was astonished at the end of it to learn he wasn't. Incredible performance.
shareim from belfast. daniel day lewis in the name of the father - almost perfect
brad pitt in the devils own - utter rubbish
"Every waking hour I'm choosing my confessions." - Michael Stipe
My god...since 2003 this has been debated...my god...get a life you people, who cares how he voices..
Besides, he used the same one in Guy Ritchie's SNATCH
The thing is there are somay different variations of accent in Ireland and even within a single county, like Down. 5 miles out of my town the accent is very different, a lot stronger. I thought his accent was fine and teh way he spoke was great. As for the Cookstown thing, he could have moved there after his da was shot, or may have made it up to help conceal his identity.
There's no similarity between his accent in Snatch and here. Snatch is great too, and is Irish too, but a diffeerent part. And Jon Voight in The General? Everything about him was totally believable. Fantastic!!

In general, people in Northern Ireland do say 'Aye' alot.
Well, I know I do... :o)
aye, your right there mate. to the above poster, since when did he use the same accent in snatch. thats like saying that nicolas cage used the same accent in faceoff as he did in captain correlli's mandolin! BTW, how come no one has mentioned pete poslethwaite? his accent was pure falls road. brilliant. day lewis was convincing but still couldn't quite get that pronunciation of words like days. has anyone ever seen accelerator. jesus thats the worst belfast accent ever! oh and i thinik pitts accent was keeky bobo
shareOK, speaking as a Derry boy, Brads accent was, as I see it, excellent. It's ridiculous to talk about "Irish" aceents in this regard, since the Irish accents vary so much. In Snatch he's doing a completely different accent, seeing as how he is playing a Traveller.
So to summarise, Brad's accent is only denounced by people who have a Dublin accent in mind, or some other bog-Irish accent. As a Northern accent, he did a great job. Better in my opinion than Daniel Day Lewis and Pete Psthelwaite did in "In the Name of the Father"

Ya mucker ye!
Nah, I'd say Daniel Day Lewis's in In the name of the father was much better... for sure.
its nat pronounced "aye" ,its ..sort of in between aye and oi...oye
shareBrad works very hard on every movie he is in. He does extensive research because he loves what he does. Listen to some interviews sometime. People love to throw mud at things they haven't even begun to understand.

lol. i can't believe a derry man actually defended pitts woeful voice.

its not an ameeeeeeeerican story. its an oirish one. cheesiest line EVER. i was sticking my head in the oven at that point
I...am an enchanter. There are some who call me...Tim.
I actually want to learn an Irish accent, I was just wondering what are good big budget movies to watch with good irish accents. Or if even better websites with actual soundbytes of different irish accents.
It would be fantastic if you could help me out.
Cheers
Well all I can say is, Brad Pitt might be bad but he does a better Irish accent than the following:
Tom Cruise(Far and away)
Sean Connery(The Untouchables)
Kevin Spacey(Ordinary decent criminal)
Richard Gere(The Jackal)
James Coburn(a fistful of dynamite)
Republicans dont watch stand up, theyre busy watching cartoons, trying to see who's gay.
I am from Belfast, Northern ireland and I have to say that I couldn't find anything wrong with his accent.
shareLOL. three year debate rages on. I hated his accent, but what do I know. To my opinionated ears, Daniel Day Lewis's rings truer, but then again, I thik his acting does too.
shareThats all to much to read but my Mum´s from Northern Ireland and I´ve lived in Belfast and Brad Pitts acent is a disgrace, a bit like the rest of this pathetic piece of propaganda. Me and my Dad and brother were laughing our asses off at this terrible film, and I said they must have had Pitts character say "c!nt" nice and early in the film to make sure you knew he was from N.Ire because you can´t tell by his voice.
This film sucks. I have lost so much respect for Pitt and Ford.
"Sh!t p!ss f#ck c#nt c#cksucker motherf#cker t!ts fart turd and tw@t." - Blink 182
I didn't see this movie when it first came out, but TNT or TBS showed it for three nights in a row, so I thought I would check it out, even though I gave away my autographed Brad Pitt picture when he broke Jen's heart. But ANYway, this movie really sucked. I want those two hours back. I think everyone that was in that movie should have to come to my house and sit there for two hours while I say really stupid things to them in a REALLY bad Irish accent. Then, I will do.....everything to them that was done at the end of the movie. (I didn't want to spoil the climactic ending for the millions of people who didn't watch this movie and are all the better for it.)
Blessed Be.
Is it possible to learn Irish accent?
shareWith proper training and enough practice, it's possible to learn any accent. I live in South Carolina and we've been training the Yankees that move down here. Heck, we've even got some of 'em sayin' y'all!!
Blessed Be.
I thought his accent along with his acting in this film was fairly good, he has gone up in my books, slightly.
shareWell, I live in Belfast and his accent was sh*te.
sharethis was possibly the worst irish accent ever by any actor
shareI'm watching it right now (first time) on Sky Digital at work and I have to say it's not half as bad as I had been led to believe.
As was said earlier...
"from Marley, to Rathfarnham, to Ballyroan/Knocklyn to Tallaght/Firhouse (which only spans a couple of miles in south Dublin)."
I'm from Knocklyon and I can concur with this. I could hit Firhouse with a stone from my garden, but the accent there differs a huge amount. But not that much to somebody from outside of South Dublin. Or Dublin. Or indeed Ireland. Pitt's accent in The Devil's Own is a generic Belfast accent and to most people living outside of Northern Ireland it is perfectly acceptable. His performance is strong and the accent works.
when he was in ardoyne he got punched in the face ahhahahahaahhhahahah!!!
shareim an irishman from the north near derry and i have to say that its not the best irish accent ive heard.....still beats richard geres horrible attempt in the jackal......that was a piss take
shareI just saw this movie the first time today and thought that Brad did an excellent job with the accent.
shareLook we should all quit slagging the accent, i live in belfast and his accent, had a few problems here and there, but seriously nothing majorly wrong
shareyeah, i agree with the person above: im also from belfast and although here and there it was a tad dodgy, it was mostly very good. it's a difficult accent at the best of times, and it's always going to be hard to accept someone as recognisable as brad as an irishman anyway. the film was an awful piece of propagandist *beep* though...
shareTo be honest i'm from the south so very often meet northeners and while it wasn't the best it certainly wasn't the worst. There are one or two parts where you could tell he was making a pretty good effort.
share*Peeved* I wish i was irish... ;-) Anywhoo, i just wanted to say that my personal favorite Irish accent ever is the one done by Robin Williams. Pick up a copy of his live on broadway act, it's rather funny.
O, and i didn't mind Pitts accent. A few sounds here or there that seemed a little over the top but nothing too bad.
"The body is chained by the insecurities of the mind"-Me
Robin Williams did a Scottish accent in his live on broadway...The best acting out of the whole "Devil's Own" movie was the end when Pitt is dying...When he stands there with the gun pointed then it drops and he begins to almost get nauseous...then he kinda slides down the door jamb...great acting on his part..cheers to ya' lad!
shareGive Ireland back to the Irish!!!
sharehe wis na doin an irish accent he was takin the mick from us scottish, and although it was hilarious not a great put on accent
LIVE FAST DIE NEVER!!
It really doesn't matter,...the movie is a pile of dung. Brad Pitt wanted out after 7 or so re-writes,...but the producer's said "OK,...you want out?" "It'll cost ya' $63 million!!!" So he did the role, albeit to me obviously with a distaste for it.
The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get!
"I think Pitt's accent was quite good."
I agree - it was excellent. He sounded as Irish as a real Irishman.

im irish, born and raised and live in cork, accent was not too bad ,ive heard worse tom cruise in far and away accent was crap
shareAccent was dreadful. Wasn't he meant to be from Cookstown? I've got a few friends who've lived in Cookstown all their lives and believe me none of them sound ANYTHING like that.
share
