I don't mind watching movies with subtitles. I know English though it's not my native but I don't understand Italian at all. So, should I watch the Italian version with the subtitles or the English dubbed version? What will be your recommendation?
I urge you to choose the subtitled version! To watch it dubbed would be to lose a lot of the magic and characterisation that the film has.

shareI concur with all of you: the dubbed version is just awful. When it came out on DVD around ten years ago, it was impossible to find a subtitled version at any of the local cash-cow video stores. The fact that I enjoyed the movie despite its awful dubbing is a testament to its power, but it was comparable to watching, say, a Marilyn Monroe movie with her wearing a mustache and imagining her without the facial hair. (Sorry, I've never been good at making analogies.) I've just found (finally!) a copy in Italian with English subtitles, and it is almost a different film--and a very fine film it is (Marilyn in her full glory, sans mustache).

shareI don't mean to come off as a snob, but one should NEVER go with an English dubbed version if you can find the original with subtitles. Yes, you have to "work" more to understand it, but that's why great actors are great, and lesser actors are lesser actors. If you were French or German (or whatever), would you want to see Daniel Day Lewis dubbed into French or German (or whatever) for "Gangs of New York" or "Lincoln"?

I did see clips of the dubbed version. Let me say, the dubbed version loses so much of the emotion and magic of the actors.
Italian version is absolutely stunning. I am so glad my teacher made us watch that version, because I don't think I would have ever realized how amazing it is:)

I agree Max there was no need to throw your little insult around. For what it's worth I couldn't stand the Italian Language version because of the slapstick element at the start and preferred to hear it in English with the subtitle's on at the same time. This film got me wondering if German people can be entertained by watching something like this or do they have other thoughts?
shareI had seen it (with subtitles) and loved it before, but when I first watched it with my husband, who is not a native speaker of English and considers himself a slow reader, we chose to watch it with dubbing. We finished it sometime after midnight, and were just basking in the glow of a wonderful movie, so he started clicking around the DVD and wanted to see how it was in Italian with subtitles. It was so much better that we got drawn in and watched the whole thing over again, right then and there!
shareItalian version all the way. Just be wary of a couple of Italian plays on words (I saw it in Italian class, so I was able to have a teacher explain it)
For example, you might want to note that "punti" means both "points" and "stitches"... it becomes a bit of a pun.
Yeah I agree with the other posters. This film *must* be seen with subtitles.
Voiceover dubbing blows. I had the misfortune of seeing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon dubbed and it was really lame.
I've seen parts of the dubbed version; it was one of the better dubbing jobs I have seen. But the subtitled version is still a lot better.

I'm not a nerd, I'm a hacker.
I just began watching the movie for the first time. I began it in Italian with English subtitles, but my family didn't want to have to read the subtitles so I submitted to the dubbing. I wouldn't call the dubbed version "silly" or anything like that. In actuality, I think they did a much better job with the dubbing than most films do. I still enjoyed the film immensely and felt the power and emotion of it. Now that I see this thread though I will be sure to see the film again some time soon in Italian with English subtitles.
