shareat the end annibal was with his wife and son and carlos was on the run.is not that hard to figure it out.stop making false assumptions about the ending .remember in the lake only annibal knew the answer to jack's question and carlos starts to backstroke away.not to mention carlos face in the lake when annibal looks him in the eyes
shareNot to kill anyone’s fun with complex plot machinations and thoughts of The Assinment – Part Two, it’s all quite simple.
Annibal completed his assignment and retired to the Caribbean with his family.
Carlos escaped the lake, wondered the Middle East and Africa before being captured and imprisoned – where he remains today.
Think about it… Annibal spent months with the CIA training to be Carlos. Carlos knew nothing about Annibal until the end. Carlos was “just” an assassin, albeit a good one.
First, the obvious parts:
Maura demonstrated, through intuition, not evidence, that she could discern the slightest change in her husband’s behavior – “You slept with someone.” She could neither have been fooled nor convinced that Carlos was her husband.
It was Carlos who continued to roam his old haunts looking for safety, comrades and work. Annibal made it clear his family was paramount and would never abandon them.
Beside Amos, Jack knew Carlos better than anyone and grew to know Annibal equally well. In the dark, Jack ingeniously used the pass phrase to identify Annibal. Carlos fled. Jack was confused for a moment but would not have been during daylight or over weeks of debriefing – especially considering Carlos had just become aware of his own double.
Now, the cinematic effects:
The car bomb “killed” Annibal, the naval officer and “freed” Annibal the CIA agent to disappear and retire.
Jack’s goal had been to neutralize Carlos. Rather than killing him, he made him powerless, ineffective, and weak – essentially impotent. He resourcefully accomplished his CIA mission and, at the same time, garnered his personal revenge against Carlos.
The fight at the baseball game was Annibal demonstrating that he had changed, that he had become a CIA agent and was no longer his former self.
The film started and ended with a spider in its web. Carlos killed it. Annibal, looking through the web at his family, let the spider go free. Annibal was letting go of Carlos.
Just watched the movie and I really think it was Carlos in the end. Blowing smoke towards the spider and almost killing it, proves it, in my opinion. I mean who does that "spider thing"? I don't thing many. It was Carlosis thing.
And what it comes to being different when *beep* his wife and almost killing the guy, showes how Annibal changed during the assignment, when pretenting to be Carlos.
So IMO, there was no twisted ending.
Also about the car bomb. I think Annibal covered from the shooting, but later got killed on that bomb. Im not sure who planned the bomb. Could be CIA. Or some terrorist, maybe the "Jackal" himself.
I didn't take that Carlos has assumed the role of Anibal at all from the ending. I could be wrong, but what I took from the ending is that Anibal had a moment just like Carlos had in the beginning of the film. Though Anibal had put all of his energy into becoming Carlos, adopting his habits and mannerisms, through all of that deception, he still was not Carlos, in the end. Carlos would not have spared a cockroach, much less a spider. Despite that, I think the ending showed that, while Anibal is no longer Carlos, he may still live with the specter of him for the rest of his life.
That is my take, anyway.
I think the interpretations that that is Carlos at the end are wrong.
It's Annibal, but he's spent so much time 'becoming' Carlos that he has changed, his behaviour that seems different to his wife is because he is subconciously still being Carlos. It's Annibal, proven by the fact that he doesn't kill the spider - that part was to show that it's still Annibal, that he still has some of his own identity in there.
the "real" ending sucks then and makes this movie nothing exceptional. Without an epic ending, this movie is nothing special.
shareThis movie is a whole lot better than the crap made nowadays. The action and acting were excellent. Not having the twist ending that is suggested doesn't change that.
