Anyone think the ending ruined the film??

I know its based on a true story and i was very happy with the rest of the film *just caught it last on on tv and really enjoyed it* but i dont know the whole jury scene really i even said out loud "oh come on now its just plain corny" which i would only do if it REALLY was lol. Seemed to remind me i was watching a movie *yes i know its based on a true story but up to that point you could of been convinced they really were them, then it just seemd a movie, lost its realism. If a similer even did actually occur in the jury i doubt it was EXACTLY like that just to ....well fake"

I have never liked the courtroom scene because it somehow brings everything before it crashing down to a TV-type drama. It's slow and drags even though it's less than fifteen minutes. Still, without it, much would have remained in the air, questions unanswered, and so it seems to be necessary. Still, I agree with the OP that it's very theatrical and unreal the way everything falls together.

True story or not, the author/director decides what scenes to include, and where and how to end it.

After the squall, we get one scene of them in the boat, sending up a flare to be rescued. Then they are at the dock, and it quickly shuffles to the court.

Why not have the soul-searching, second-guessing, blame-laying and other emotional confrontations and such in the lifeboat, or on the vessel that rescues them? Having a dry (pun intentional) court of enquiry scene was a choice - and didn't work well. And that is a shame, because it takes an otherwsie great film down a few notches.
