Anyone think the ending ruined the film??

I know its based on a true story and i was very happy with the rest of the film *just caught it last on on tv and really enjoyed it* but i dont know the whole jury scene really i even said out loud "oh come on now its just plain corny" which i would only do if it REALLY was lol. Seemed to remind me i was watching a movie *yes i know its based on a true story but up to that point you could of been convinced they really were them, then it just seemd a movie, lost its realism. If a similer even did actually occur in the jury i doubt it was EXACTLY like that just to ....well fake"

LOL That's hilarious.

I saw this when I was 16, living in England, and I really liked it. Just watched it again recently - it's...not awful. But yeah, the courtroom ending, which I remember being moved by when I was younger, never really gets to the point of 'stirring'. It was altogether lame and the bell drama was retarded. They should have just done a montage of the survivors and how they spent the rest of the summer (alone, preparing for college, fighting with their parents, drinking, etc.). There's alot wrong with this movie - the narration was badly timed and poorly read (you want Scott Wolf's character to die just so he'll stop reading from his lame journal). I liked the disturbing psycho-rich-kid Dolphin killing scene. That was raw and intense.

I thought this was a true story. If it was, then why is everyone saying the ending sucked. Thats like saying the ending of "Titanic" sucked and they should have changed it to a happy ending where everyone lived.

If I die tomorrow, please make it right after some good sex.

They did not have to have the board of inquiry (court) scene to have a complete movie.
It is anticlimactic, and probably the least historically accurate part of the film. It seemed like it was trying somehow to be a "Captain, My Captain" moment, like the end of "Dead Poet's Society".

As has been mentioned, the film could have ended with the boys being rescued, or arriving back in the States and dealing with their parents, then cut to postscript about the Peace Corps and Vietnam.

The fact that this is a true story has nothing to do with the ending being good or not. It has to do with the ending being cliché, acted in a corny way and not feeling in synch with what happened before.

I think the ending was good because without the court scene it seemed like, "Oh well, some kids drowned, THE END."

Court scene brought a sense of closure and brought the kids and skipper together to deal with what happened to them, which let's face it, was one of the worst things to happen on a boat full of close friends. Plus the court scene lets you see how much the boys changed from spoiled little brats to grown men who have to face what mistakes they made, what death is about, etc.

I recommend anyone to switch of once the ship sank far too slow. Indeed, under a White Squall it does not take these 10 or 20 minutes (never counted them!), it indeed is a very quick thing of about a half or a whole minute and goes straight down to the bottom of the sea. A quick, instant thing, not time enough to make it dramatic and too short, to build and affort a full-size model on Malta... I think, the real story inside the film is quite a short one: Ship with certain people did sailing voyages to these and that places, sank during a White Squall that certain time. Anything else is more or less pure fiction.

The sinking sequence in titanic was similar. I heard that the sinking of the titantic took twice as look in the movie than it did in real life.

I think the ending was somewhat lame. Scott Wolf gave it his best, and the interview thing with Jeff Bridges was cool, but the whole bell-ringing thing with the dolphin killer guy was just retarded. I wanted to beat the $hit out of that guy the whole movie, and then they let him in on the group hug. Whatever. I would have rather seen more character developement between Jeff Bridges' wife and the kids on the boat than the ending, which didn't really add anything to the movie. By that time we all knew how the kids felt about the skipper.

My question is, why did Frank have the bell in court with him anyway??? It's like he actually went there KNOWING he was going to ring it to get the Skipper to stay or something. It seemed like one of those conveniently placed props that drive a person crazy.

Other than that, I think this is a wonderful movie, even the ending.

I wanted to like this movie, but the ending did somewhat ruin it. The part where that fu ckin a-s-s hole rings the bell and is allowed in the group hug was bull *beep* The ending did come off as corny to me, even though the rest of the movie was pretty cool. If I had done the ending, it would have been bitter sweet, maybe show some of the wreckage at the bottom as scott wolf provides a narrative closing voice over, describing how a part of all of them died at sea and how they changed, etc etc. I would have expected Ridley Scott to provide an awesome ending....until I saw Kingdom of Heaven. Now I don't expect anything spectacular from him.

Not quite. The movie "Titanic" is about three hours. The real ship struck the berg at 11:40 PM and sunk at 2:20 am.

Seriously? I thought the ending was great. I mean- it would seem a bit unresolved if they didnt have the trial. Just think of it if there wasnt that ending. So the 4 guys would die and they would just continue on with their lives and never see each other again? I don't know- I thought the ending suited the film

This is a great film. The rarely well done genre of the possible and eventual brotherhood of a group of guys coming from different backgrounds is portrayed beautifully here. For any guy who ever went to a boys camp, this movie is great. Its this kind of film that promotes the greatest emotional response in most guys, even if they deny it.
