Homo-Erotic
Does anyone else think this movie is a bit homo-erotic? Scott Wolf and Ryan Phillipe should get it on already. ;-)

Yes I think there's a homoerotic aspect to the movie, and that there are hints of affection between Wolf and Phillippe, but people have different opinions on it. The guys do spend a lof of the movie half naked and only in their underwear . . .
I must confess that I find it surprising that a female doctor should be on board ship where everyone else is male.
shareJust watched this last night, but did not find it particularly erotic, homo or otherwise. The shirtless was situational, hot weather all guys.
On the hother hand there was one scene I should have backed up and rewatched, as I didn't quite get the reference. It was after the two boys get the shots. The first was obviously suffering from VD of some sort, the second was not. There was a statement by the second licke, "I didn't even cop a feel". Which I take to mean he did not do anything with the female carrier who infected the first, yet he is getting a shot too. then the first replies, "don't blame me for your orientation". This cught my ear because the phrase was anachronistic to the time (1960). I am fairly certain the reference to orientation or sexual orientation did not become part of common usage until the 70's or later. Back to the point, if the second infectee did not get it from the female, he must have been exposed by his shipmate, making it a same-sex exposure.
I just watched this film this morning for the very first time.
It seemed pretty clear to me that Alice, upon learning that one of the crew members was likely suffering from a VD, decided to simply treat all the boys. They'd all been out on the town for a little fun, and it's not inconcievable that several of the boys were infected. Seemed more a precaution than anything else. The way she yelled "NEXT" suggest that a stream of guys were getting a shot. Robert's response to the "sexual orientation" comment does not suggest he was "caught" with his proverbial "pants" down in regards to some unmentioned, and completely unimplied, same sex encounter.
Which brings me to the topic at hand. I agree with a few others, whatever homoeroticism is here is clearly being brought by the viewers. This isn't a Joel Schumacher pic, where the level of homoeroticism is blatant and easily detected regardless of sexual identity. Scott has no history of bringing this element to his work, and frankly I think it's absolute bunk to suggest he framed this guys in a purposely erotic way. Obviously the guys are attractive, this IS Hollywood afterall, and I think the marketing of this picture was purposefully a tad erotic, but the actual product doesn't live up to that suggestion.
People need to learn the difference between a movie being made with homoerotic intent, and simply calling it homoerotic because YOU are turned on. One's level of titilation, or uncomfortability, in regards to shirtless men, and platonic male bonding, isn't enough to put that stamp on a film.
Obviously.
Why be dull?
I didn't get turned on by any guys. I don't think anyone was a homo, either. If that's what you like, watch 300 : http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0416449/Ss/0416449/Yahoo.jpg.html?hint=tt0416449 Now that movie's gay.
shareMore than homo-erotic is it idiotic. Homo-erotism would be tolerable, if it were in some plot, but has anybody seen a plot by Mr. Scott?

That's so weird that's just what I was thinking as I was watching this movie...
sharetotal f-g movie.
-guys running around in underwear.
-lingering shots on their asses.
-every one of them looked off of an Abercrombie billboard.
>>>>>>>>>F-G movie<<<<<<<<<<<<...and a lousy f-g movie at that!
if it is homo-erotic or not is completely up too the viewer i would say..
the boys themselves surely werent, they were working hard in hot weather, so they walked around with bare bodies, and they were living close up on eachother and were in the need to depend on eachother, they were in the same age, and had some common interests, of this i find it only natural that they became close with eachother, bare-bodied in hot weather or not..
and if something, the directors focus on this was perhaps to show how voulnerable they were depending on eachother..
also boys with little clothes on would be as interesting to the girls as girls with little clothing on is interesting for us guys..
and as a straight man i admit enjoying the atmosphere with the guys becoming closer to eachother in this film..i am fex very close to some of mye male friends.. i can also find the male body esthetic beautiful, in a completely different way than female bodies ofcourse...
I don´t think the movie is homo-erotic cause all the guys take off their shirts or run around in underwear. This is quite typical when it´s warm, I agree.
But I think the movie is erotic, bacause the casting agency did only(!) cast extremly good looking young men. Each of them looks like a top model, non of them is ugly in any way. This might be typical for hollywood, but in combination with so much naked skin, it is erotic.
Since I´m gay, for me the movie is homo-erotic. I´m sure for many women the movie is herero-erotic.
Anyway, I always like watching the dvd.
Greetz, Thor
What a load of crap homo erotic ,Why would anybody think that , Unless you are a homo? Must be one of most enjoyable films i have seen with good acting and put together!

And the winner of the "Best Homoerotic Picture where Upper Class Teen Boys get Syphillis" for 1996, is....
(fumbles with envelope)
WHITE SQUALL!!!!
...a crowd of young men (all cast because they're in shape, look good shirtless and look terrific oiled up in their matching tight, white underwear) goes wild.
This movie is a fricking Abercrombie and Fitch ad ...as gay as can be. It couldn't be gayer if it was called "White Sp*rm," or "Adventures of the S.S. Chickenhawk."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
All male environment? ...check!
Boys crying? ...check!
All this movie needs to be gayer is a staight guy saying "Man, I was so drunk, I don't remember a thing about last night..."
It doesn't help that Ridley Scott (always conscious of design) let his production designer put all the boys in white everything (shirts, pants, shorts, underwear). It's like softcore gay porn.
Take a drink at:
Scott Wolf's over-tweezed eyebrows
Scott Wolf: "Some of us are here for dicipiline"
Stirz grabs another guys balls to prove how tough and "not-gay" he is
Stirz: "Let me tell you girls something..."
Jeff Bridges "Don't look down, look in my eyes, we'll do it together"
Ryan Philippe screams like a girl, then wets his pants.
Ryan Philippe sobs into Jeff Bridge's bare shoulder (aw hell, just take a drink everytime Ryan P cries, and needs to be comforted)
Scott Wolf: "He's strong, tough... and he makes you want to please him"
Stirz (after leaving the bathroom) "...want to shake it for me?"
Stirz cries like a girl
Ryan P: "...because we got a hard-on for you, pansy!"
Everyone gets V.D.
Shirtless guy rubs his fist on other shirtless guys arm (on the island)
hahahahaha, nuff said huh
