The baby **SPOILERS**
How does the baby die? I just rewatched it and after the scene, there is never an explanation on how the baby died.

Neglection.
The Mother(and Father) were on heroin constantly and went through a week of being high on Skag.So the Baby dies of (Probably) Starvation.
'Hey hey mama said the way you move!'
Thank you killfair.
I have to admit that that scene where you see the baby dead in it's crib was very damn upseting. But, later on, during the withdrawl scene, when Renton sees the baby crawling on the ceiling and twists it's head, Exorcist style, that was freaky and somewhat darkly humorous at the same time!

I always thought it was cot-death that killed her. That's mentioned in the book when they are comforting her saying that there's nothing that could have been done and it wasn't her fault. I think it took a while after she died before they discovered her body.
shareI'm pretty sure no one knew what killed her, but they speculated/assumed it was cot death to avoid thinking about the possibility that it was their fault. Truth is they were completely out of it for a week before she was found--that's definitely enough time for dehydration to kill.
shareThe second time I watched the film I got the idea / assumed that Renton or one of his friend had given the baby a shot while being high, but the person who did it couldn't remember so because of being high. Anyway, I think they say that there's nothing anybody could have done just because they wanted to get rid of the guilt.
And the mother is surrounded by all the possible fathers, and she just takes another shot...
And the music right afterwards, Such a perfect day, when the scene has recently happened... it's so heartbreaking, and humorous, and real in a way...
Why the hell would anyone give a baby a shot? Heroin doesn't make you psychotic, it just puts you on the nod!
shareThere have been cases where babies have been given methadone by their parents to make them sleep.

I realise that but the way she phrased it made it sound like someone had done it for no reason at all because they were so out of it that they didn't know what they were doing.
shareYeah, seeing the baby like that was very disturbing, but it was inevitable given the situation...that kid was doomed one way or the other.
shareI always got the impression that it was something like SIDS (aka cot death). Neglect probably played a role in that no one was watching/feeding/changing the baby, factors that may contribute to SIDS (it's still unclear what actually causes it, probably multifactorial).

Trust me, I'm a doctor.
I don't see how anyone is drawing cot death as a conclusion. The baby is portrayed as constantly being neglected and left to crawl around near old needles, pills, etc. In one of the final scenes before she dies, she is crying on the floor and everyone is passed out around her. She obviously died of malnourishment, dehydration, and neglect.
In fact, when we see her dead in the crib it looks as if she may have been dead for a day before anyone realized. Cot death that can happen to even the most well cared for baby is not the case for Dawn's death.

Babies also like to put in their mouths everything they find around, that's why every pill, games with small pieces, cleaning products, etc... advise buyers to keep them well clear of the reach of babies. Maybe the baby took something that only affected her later when she was already in the cot.
shareJesus, that scene is traumatic for me as a father. When I first saw the film in the '90s, I didn't have kids yet and it didn't hit me nearly as hard. What I want to know is why a social worker hadn't taken the poor thing away!

I am experiencing the same thing; I have a six month old, and while the scenes weren't as troublesome when I watched the movie in the past, I have a very hard time watching any of the baby scenes now.
My name is Buck, and I'm here to party.
(Thank you TNT for that dubbing brilliance)
I guess to the non-parents, we sound like we have turned into wimps!
P.S. What is the story behind your sig?

Probably, and I'm okay with that.
Have you ever seen Kill Bill? How about on TNT? So much terrible dubbing, but this was my personal favorite.

I have seen it, and really loved it (both parts); but not since its theatrical release so I'm blanking on what this was supposed to be. Can you add some asterisks to translate it?

Ah, sure thing.
In Volume 1, after the bride wakes from her coma, the orderly comes in with the trucker, explaining the conditions that the trucker can have sex with her comatose body. She then flashes back to the orderly "introducing" himself to her, and he says, "My name is Buck, and I'm here to *beep*
Now this party substitution is used shortly thereafter. She kills Buck by slamming his head in the door. In his pockets, she finds his keys, that have a very over the top keychain that reads, "P*ssy Wagon." She then wheels herself outside to the parkinglot, and find an equally over the top truck that has "P*ssy Wagon written all over it."
Of course after writing all that out, I found the clip that covers all of this information, heh.

Ah, right...so the actual word rhymed with his name.
Why in the world they would even try to show a movie like that in censored form is beyond me.

I agree, the dubbed versions of a film can really butcher a movie to pieces.
"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit me!"- Hudson in Aliens.
Nah, guys don't sound like babies at all. I've got little sisters, but no kids, and I was extremely disturbed by that scene. It was so sad and horrible that I gasped in shock at 4am in the morning and woke everyone in the house up because I found it so sad. I wouldn't want that to happen to any babies at all. The thought of it happening to my siblings is terrifying, so I can see what you guys are saying.
shareCool, thanks.

I know exactly what you mean, (most) people who haven't had to care for a child won't have that relation to those scenes, that parents and caregivers have. Not wimpy, but less "emotionally numb", I'd say lol. Becoming a parent definitely put life and the world in a completely new perspective for me.
I need to watch a less crazed out movie now. Had barely an idea of what this movie was about when I pressed play lol. I also was eating a snack, and had to stop at the "worst toilet in Scotland" scene... ha.
I too have the same reaction to the scene (and the crawling on the ceiling scene). I hit the mute button and turn away from the screen. Then again I do same for the infamous 'toilet' scene :-) Not for the squeamish and rough on parents ...
shareThe toilet scene was rough even when I was younger and single!
shareY'all know this is a fictional movie, right? You really couldn't watch it? I'd avoid anything but G rated movies and definitely don't leave your house!!!
I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
Absolutely not. It isn't difficult for a person who chooses not to have children, to imagine creating life, having that physical bond and having that life end.
This is in no way directed at you (only seems that way due to my replying to you lol), but I can't stand it when people think I can't possibly understand certain emotions, due to not having given birth.
We've met before, haven't we?
It's always interesting when people say they have no difficulty imagining something they have never experienced. Yet virtually all of us who are actually parents report that we couldn't imagine what it was like before it happened. Unlike you, we have experienced life both ways!

Although putting yourself in another person's shoes is different for everyone. In the way they do it and how in-depth it can be.
I'll sum it up to people having terrible imaginations and not being able to feel sympathy unless personally affected.
We've met before, haven't we?
it was neglect, pure and simple...I remember hating that scene when I first saw it as a teenager and now as a mother (and an ex-dabbler) it just tears your heart out....and when the mom shot up again immediately after I thought that was the most evil thing in the world...but I get it now. Somethings you can't deal with straight. Of course, the awful irony is without the drugs there probably wouldn't be a problem in the first place, but there you go- live by the sword, die by the sword and the baby was just collateral damage
shareirrelevant. This is what made me give this movie just one star. Overall they try to make this some kind of comedy, then they show a baby dying because his parents are too fkt up all the time. How ta fk is a baby's death in the arms of junkies fit into a comedy??
shareIt's dark, but it's not a dark comedy imo.
It's just a cautionary tale at best.
For a really dark comedy that is actually funny I recommend Filth.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1450321/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_6
So much better imo, still Scottish, and actually by the same guy.
They weren't trying to make a comedy per se, it was just one of those edgy 90's-type films. It didn't really fit into any particular genre except perhaps 'postmodern tragedy'.
shareSo you give a movie one star because it wasn't made to your liking? It's listed as a drama.
I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
I just rewatched this movie on Netflix, after not having seen it since its theatrical release. I just figured that the baby accidently ingested some drugs that were laying out on the floor somewhere. Talk about being an innocent victim!
