Did they not have A/C in Mississippi in 1996?

The whole movie, everybody's sweating buckets. I mean I know they're backwards down in the South, but being anti-A/C? WTF?

(And yes, I'm sure it was the director just going for an effect to increase tension, but it was pretty stupid, if you ask me.)

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

My grandma lived in Alabama all her life. Even during the summer she would keep the AC set at 85 degrees.

In the summer I have my A/C set quite low. It's even wired to an alarm and calls 9-1-1 if the temperature gets above 78! ;-)

I take offense at the "backwards" jab, but I was watching this movie a few days ago and I couldn't get past all the sweating. It was ridiculous. I can see some homes that keep their thermostats up, my mom doesn't turn on the AC unless company is coming over, but a restaurant would not have any business if it has no AC and for sure the court house would not be that hot. Bad call by the producer/director to film it that way.
Spinning... because knitting isn't weird enough.

I could be wrong but it may have been done on purpose to LITERALLY show the heat in the south.

reply

This. They might have A/C in most of buildings but the minute you step out in that summer heat with all the humidity you're gonna be sweating.

It was really distracting. Ok, I got it, it's hot.

reply

Why, shucks, ya'll, we just done got ourselves indoor outhouses last year.

Yeah, lord knows it gets hot; but even so, I do not see as many people as sweaty as these in this one movie in an entire summer. And for a week or 2 this summer, it was hotter up north while I was visiting than it was down here.

reply

I didn't mind it too much on Ashley Judd, she looked hot, no pun intended.

Oh, pun fully intended, my friend.

Saying we're "backwards down in the south" is a pretty huge and inaccurate generalization there, bub.

I was just reiterating the prevailing stereotype that the movie itself was making. Having the KKK marching in the street is hardly progressive.

People don't realize it, but equally as important a job as cooling is dehumidifying for an A/C unit. In fact, some types of A/C only dehumidify. Being so humid there, I can imagine A/C not working nearly as well as in drier hot climates. Especially in a civic building where they tend to have outdated and/or dilapidated facilities.

The story takes place in 1985.

You have that stupid line from The Vapors song as your signature, and you call us backwards in the south? Still though, I get what you're saying, even if you're a moron. It is kinda silly that they would be sweating like that.

reply

From someone as sage as you, being called a moron is high praise. High praise indeed.

Now go "turn Japanese" like you know you want to.
