How comes the shower room had some sort of perverts viewing gallery?

For guards. It might have escaped you (hahaha) but it's a prison.

yeah , i did think of that , but no other prison movies have it in shower .
why that room particularly ?
Does the mess hall have specially designed elevated wealkways?
usually when presence is required guards just walk the floor .

Its in Alcatraz. Maybe unique.

The cell block had elevated walkways called "Gun Galleries".

That scene is not the real shower room from Alcatraz.

It was a stage in Hollywood created for the film.

So it is a Hollywood fantasy to have a bunch of prison guards watching the inmates rape each other in the shower from a balcony above? Truly weird what they come up with when left to their own imaginations.

LOL no it was created for the scene and it worked great scene.

It would make sense in some ways if you have prisoners who are know to be violent to have a raised position you can watch them (showers are known for when violence etc happens)

If rape etc was going to happen they could see it and stop it.

In the modern day if they could get away with it cameras would be used but due to peoples rights etc they cant do it plus a fair amount of the guards are corrupt

I'll say!
It was more like a lazer tag , or paintball arena!

It's not just the elevated position , the showers are all arranged in a maze of "islands" - perfect for cover.

well , not 'perfect' it turns out.
