I'm sorry to say I hated this film and since it was the first Eddie Murphy I ever saw (or was aware of) I don't like him much, either. He just isn't funny, just embarassing, and, in this particular movie, supporting ALL the stereotypes and harassment fat people have to live with. It's just not something to make fun of. This film is stupid, pointless and not funny at all.
Eddie Murphy has been in a huge acting slump (excluding Shrek and the PJ's as he did not act in them) and you can't judge his comedy by one movie. Try one of his classics such as Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, or Coming to America.
Alright, should I ever get the chance to, I will. I don't want to offend any of his fans, but I personally really don't like him. I didn't like his "Dr. Dolittle" either.
The movies you mention are not "Eddie" movies, you didn't like "The Nutty Professor" or "Dr.Dolittle" that's not REAL Eddie Murphy movies, as the previous user said, watch a classic, Beverly Hills Cop is a perfect example, or just watch his talent as a stand up comedian in "Raw" or "Delirious".
I can take jokes. But this, I just don't find very funny. I'm sorry! I don't mind the restaurant scene in Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life", but I do mind The Nutty Professor. I can't help it, really. Sorry.
Kirsty0775 - If you take a lighthearted comedy that is sympathetic to it's main character THIS seriously, you have problems.
I'm a not so slim woman myself, and I didn't take this movie seriously. It wasm't a hateful or serious movie; it was quite endearing, and while it had it's share of jokes, it also made the point that you should be happy with yourself the way you are, no matter what anyone else says.
People like you are kinda closeminded. Stop watching TV and movies altogether if your fragile mind can't take it.
*lol* If you think you know a person by reading ONE of their posts on some forum, I'm not sure if I'm the only one with "problems" around here. "People like me"? What sort of people might that be? I'd be quite interested in learning my entire life story from you. Seems I really need someone I've never met to tell me what I'm all about ;)
Seriously, my mind isn't "fragile" as you put it just because I hate one film. Actually, it's not just this one, it's any of that "let's make fun of fat people" stuff. It's not actually the films themselves that bother (or would you rather traumatize? *lol*) me but the reasons for which they're made - that stuck up slim celebrities can make easy money by wearing a fat suit and making obscene jokes. THAT bothers me. Films like the Nutty Professor ones or "Big Mama's House" have no artistic merit whatsoever, the message to accept yourself the way you are is certainly there but gets lost, and the acting is awful. No effort goes into the making of them, so they're essentially worthless and still make a lot of money because they entertain stupid people. That's why I don't like them.
Hi, No, I don't know you, and I don't care to know you. But by 'people like you', I wasn't refering to you personally, I was reffering to people who find the bad in EVERYTHING and take everything seriously, even when it's clearly not meant to be serious. Those are the kinds of people I dislike. The same kinds of people who band together and call 'shallow hal' offensive because they can't see the other good parts of the movie, they would just focus on the aspects of the movie they dislike and ignore the whole movie as a whole.
This movie was obviously a comedy, and a good one. The fact you cannot see that is kinda sad. I mean sure, dislike any movie you want - but this wasn't a bad movie. The point was, I thought the movie made it more then clear - the professor while although a large man, was a kind and intelligent man who was far better then the likes of his alter-ego 'buddy-love'. Yes, it has alot of jokes, it's a comedy, but it also had alot of heart and feeling to it, and that's the only merit it had. If it were simply a comedy about 'making fun of fat people' with no emotion or postive message whatsoever, i'd see your point. But since it does, i'm afraid I can't. Mainly because i've seen much worse, and this just looks good by comparison.
"that stuck up slim celebrities can make easy money by wearing a fat suit and making obscene jokes. THAT bothers me. Well yes, it does annoy me when 'thin' people or any people put on a fat suit and pretend like they know what it's like (and even get paid for it like these celebs do), but hey, in the case of celebs, that is their job. Hollywood is that kind of place. And about the message getting 'lost', it gets lost on otherwise idiodic people who don't have the brain capacity to hold any new information in their tiny peabrain heads. Since the issue with weight is one for me, it didn't get lost on me.
I'm not saying the movie is the greatest movie ever, cause it isn't, I just don't think it's right to take everything seriously. I mean, the movie was pretty funny besides (and no, not because of the 'fat jokes', those were actually kinda lame), just cause the dialouge between the family was amusing. But then again, I kind of have a odd sense of humor.
I sort of see your point, though. But there have been alot worse movies out there.
I know this is 10 years but boo hoo your reason for thinking this movie is offensive is stupid, you laugh your ass off when you hear gay, race and religious jokes but when you hear fat jokes it is so damn offensive
If you want to see a great Eddie Murphy movie, see "Bowfinger". Its absolutely hilarious. Don't just Murphy's talent based on this movie. I like him but I hated this movie. Check out "Bowfinger". You'll love it.
Actually..If you really want to see Eddie Murphy's comic talent watch Richard Pryor's stand up act, becuase Eddie Murphy has pretty much just copied Richard Pryor.
I actually disagree with you Kirsty0775, Because 'Nutty Professor' doesn't exactly make fun of fat people, but portrays how some fat people are treated. Don't you see the film ends with Pr. Klump getting Carla to like him without him having to change nothing about himself? I believe this film carries a strong message: "People should love themselves no matter how they look"
Eddie Murphy is such a talented actor, look how many completly different actors he played in the film! He's not embarssing but hilariously funny!
I agree with Mia on how it portrays the horrible...meanness>.<...fat people go through but I think the film was embarressing because of professor klump's family...they were so gross and the entire movie I was embarressed for sherman for bringing that Carla chick to his family's house...it hurt me.
emmm are u guys all stupid eddie is at his all time best regarding comic scenes in this movie..how can u not find the scenes where granny and cleetus are threatrning to kill each other and where granny is talkin about her old days with men..its pure brilliance from eddie m acting out several characters and would you guys knocking him shut up...the man is a legend...raw,del,bhc1=2,shrek
Kirsty, stop being a tit. The film is so inoffensive its untrue. You clearly have no sense of humour which is unsurprising as you are German. Get a grip - I bet you're fat too xxx
My my, aren't we being a bit of a racist there. I daresay I have quite a good sense of humor, but no tolerance for discrimination. Whether I'm fat or not isn't the point here but, ohh, guess what, I'm not, and I still don't like this movie. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you're wrong. Tough. Try again.
You know how everyone thinks of overweighted people, this movie may be confrontating.. but it's not like you didn't knew all this already. And besides, the part where Eddy Murphy gets back at the comedian is incredible funny and shows the movie is not about making fun of fat people. It has a good message in it which all fat people or whoever is unhappy with their looks can learn from; 'just accept yourself as you are'
Pffft, who does she need to lose weight to like it? I'm overweight and I LOVED it! Yes, there are some fat-jokes, but think of the MESSAGE this movie has!
I think only the very obese people found this movie offensive. I thought it was funny as hell. If you feel offended, put the Krispy Kreme and the remote down and run some miles.
Whenever they film a comedy, it seems the politically correct police are on alert. We could say Mrs. Doubtfire wasn't funny...um, because divorce is tragic. Grosse Pointe Blank wasn't funny because...well, assassination is no laughing matter. Fat jokes aren't funny. Ethnic jokes aren't funny. In Nutty II, the boards said the hamster stuff wasn't funny. Make a joke and someone will shoot it down as inappropriate.
