Honestly one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen in a movie..

I've seen alot of movies, and I mean heartwrenching stuff like Schindler's List and so on. But that scene at the comedy club where he is totally humiliated and then has to take his date home . My God, the saddness is overwhelming . that scene makes me cry every time I see it, I feel so bad for him. Murphy really did an outstanding job there. It honestly comes to mind every time I think of tearjerker moments in movies. I saw this a long time ago and it still affects me...was suprised no one else had commented on it here. Occasionally when I see a very overweight person it comes to mind and it has made me more sympathetic to their pain I think.

Oh yeah, I didn't like that scene also. It made me so sad knowing that I've seen others picked on with their weight. I try to not let it bother me much since it's only a movie.

I agree. That comedian was very rude.

I think Murphy's performance of Sherman Klump was one of the the warmest and most sympathetic portrayals ever in movies. That's how much I like the character.

Eddie Murphy is a complex guy. You know a part of him is Buddy Love or James "Thunder" Early. Just when you think he is just a clown, donkey or cad, you remember Sherman and Akeem and know he has a real, warm, likable side somewhere in there too he can draw upon.

I didn't tear up at the scene, but I was uncomfortable and the look on his face, just melted my heart. After reading everyone's comments in this thread, THAT'S when I teared up.I don't know why, but it just made me think that this happens in real life when children make fun of other kids because of their weight.

That scene was very well acted!!

It made the revenge scene with Buddy Love so much sweeter because that stand up deserved it. He treated Sherman like he was the dirt under his foot. His jokes were not even funny, and I don't mean the cruel ones he was making at Sherman.

I never cried during the scene (at least not yet) but I always feel a tremendous sense of dread and melancholy watching it. Seeing and knowing what will happen to Sherman is like an seeing an innocent dog get hit by a car, you hate it and want to stop it but there is nothing you can do for him. Effective scene in the movie.

If anything Chapelle's comedian character is just a *beep* comedian. He probably wasn't smart enough to come up with anything so he just used Sherman as an excuse to make jokes at his expense. Most comedians know the limit, they would make a joke or two and then say "Just Kidding" but that douche went for Sherman's jugular. He absolutely deserved that beatdown he ended up getting and deserved a little bit more in my opinion.

And yet...you keep seeing it!

The thing I don't get is how the crowd kept laughing. When Sherman said, "Okay, you got me," that should've been it. It wasn't even funny anymore. It went from funny to mean-spirited. But at least Buddy Love got some payback. I loved the scene when Buddy Love threatens the dean and tells him he'll choke off his air supply. It showed that Buddy Love was a part deep down inside of Sherman that wanted revenge. Buddy was part of Sherman. They never tell you how Buddy feels about Sherman, but Mr. Hyde hated Dr. Jekyll because he considered him a coward. I think we all have a Buddy inside us. We can be at work and we'll be getting ridiculed or chewed out, but we know we can't act on how we feel. The Buddy Love in us wants to tear the creep apart.

It is very well done scene

But it makes it all the more rewarding when Buddy gets Reggie back. boy does he get him back !

reply

I agree! I've always found that really sad.

LOL wow Nutty professor is nowhere near Schindler's list, you should feel bad for Sherman but you don't need to cry. I felt bad when he was humiliated but when he turns into a buddy the movie gets better Schindler's List and Life is beautiful are movies that should make you burst into tears, not that is movie. Nutty Professor is one of the funniest movies i have ever seen and i know lots of people who are a little overweight that love this movie as much as do

I have seen comedians do stand up shows and totally use and disrespect members of their audiences. Even though it doesn't bother some or at least they "act" as if it doesn't, I still don't see a place for it at all. If you are a truly skilled comedian, you should be capable of making people laugh uproariously hard without disgracing anyone. The front rows especially, are not paying comedians to insult and verbally abuse them. I've never thought that kind of thing was funny. I wonder if they'd find it that hilarious if it were them? Their father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter?

I know. For a comedy movie, it definitely has one of the saddest scenes ever. Sherman is such an kind, good hearted person and for him to be humiliated and made fun of by some a**hole was devastating to watch. I also hated the dean because he made fun of him all the time too. Why do people have to be so cruel especially to those who are such good people?
