Honestly one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen in a movie..

I've seen alot of movies, and I mean heartwrenching stuff like Schindler's List and so on. But that scene at the comedy club where he is totally humiliated and then has to take his date home . My God, the saddness is overwhelming . that scene makes me cry every time I see it, I feel so bad for him. Murphy really did an outstanding job there. It honestly comes to mind every time I think of tearjerker moments in movies. I saw this a long time ago and it still affects me...was suprised no one else had commented on it here. Occasionally when I see a very overweight person it comes to mind and it has made me more sympathetic to their pain I think.

Watching that scene right now, i know what you mean i think cause he's such a nice guy it makes it so much worse.

Ditto , im watching that scene right now , his facial expressions are perfectly fitting and the sad background music with the violin/piano playing all fits in nicely.Murphy does do a cracking job as you stated.

I admit that at first I laughed (along with my sides cramping) at what Dave Chappelle was saying. I rewinded the scene and stood up as I watched it. This time, I noticed the look on the professor's face and I started crying over my laughter. He did a great acting job there. So did Jada Pinkett.

I think it's the best scene of the movie.

It was the cutting back and forth between the crowd laughing their ass's off, and Klumps broken down face as a reaction to every joke. Very sad, I use to dread watching it as a kid. But now, I just laugh at Dave chapelle's awesome jokes lol. "Now we know what's eating Gilbert Grape!" "last time this man felt a breast, it was in a bucket of KFC! Extra CRISPY!". lol.

And it makes the scene with Buddy love confronting Reggie all the more gratifying.

What made it more sad is when he walked out in the rain and he didn't even bother any more to cover himself with a newspaper.

I remember watching this with my parents and little brother one saturday 'movie night' back in '96 and laughing so hard at Chappelle, but as that scene fades in and the music and Shermans sad, sad, adorable face. I looked across the dark and could see my Dad sobbing in his armchair, the only other film I ever saw him cry at was Bambi (obvious scene) and the sadness washed over me. Went from hysterical howling to filling up.
Amazing scene. Probably best in the film.

Wow...to lonesoldier...what a moving and touching memory...I'm sure many people skip the movie because they think it's 'below' them. But that scene is so touching, your dad must be a nice guy. :)

And yeah, my dad is a nice a guy, the best.
He lives in Australia now and I miss him an awful lot. Nutty Professor was on TV a few weeks back and when this scene came on I just welled up all over again.
But I actually think it was more of a nostalgic feeling, and also, know it may sound corny, but my dad kind of showed me the importance of empathy and how vital it is to see things from another point of view. He also cried at the end of 'Look Who's Talking Now' when the family are reunited in the log cabin on christmas eve LOL, bet he sounds a right soppy git Haha!

My mother and my aunt both said at the same time, "Oh my, he doesn't even care if he gets wet." I looked at them cause for some reason, for me, that made it all the more sad.

It was indeed a very emotional moment, it shows that overweight people have feelings and it defiantly feels good when Buddy gets back at him later

True, the emotion of Sherman's face when he is being humilated is incredible. Its amazing that Eddie Murphy pulled it off through all that make up. He definitely should have received some sort of recognition. But, yeah I tear up too! It's so sweet when Buddy gets revenge!

I just finished watching it and I know exactly what you mean. The moment that REALLY got to me was when he was walking Carla up to her doorstep and he looks up at her right before she says, "Look that comic tonight, he was..." And that look of complete hurt on his face, it was so spot on. Like he was trying desperately to hold in tears. I think all of us know that feeling all too well. Eddie Murphy was right on with that one facial expression.

I watched the movie over and over all this past weekend and that part just tears me up. I was a victim of bullying. Not for being overweight because I was stick then, but because I was a "Good Girl". I was picked on all the time by a person who made jokes just like Reggie did and I could just relate to how Sherman was feeling because 1996 was when I was going through all of that. At the same time the movie came out.

That is still a difficult scene for me to watch, even after all these years. I'm a big woman, so I know the pain. As they zoomed in on his face and the music swelled. Heartbreaking. People don't realize how painful words can be.
