Bill Murray in Kingpin

does anybody else think that only Bill Murray could have played Big Ern in this movie? he was so halarious. Sure he was a horrible person, but only the talent of Bill Murray could have made this guy as big as a jack-ass as he was!

"I didnt wanna get beat by a guy with a hook, ya know?!"

reply

Yeah, he was great. Perfectly done. I wish he still did comedies like this. Though his cameo in Zombieland was like old times.

If you haven't seen Rushmore, then do it soon...another great BM role!

I've actually been trying to picture Jim Carrey in that role (and believe me I'm a huge Carrey fan) but cant, carrey makes his characters too likable.
While Murray isn't necissarily the first name that comes to mind when you think of comedic villains, he has all the makings of the best; we already saw it in ghostbusters, scrooged, groundhog day etc. the difference is his character was the protagonist, take out the postivie qualities of those characters and you have big Ern. Too bad Murray hasn't played the bad guy more often.

I'm surprised that the Farrelly brothers haven't tried to work with Bill Murray more often. From all accounts they seemed impressed by his improvisation, since they used a lot of it. Did Murray have an issue with them? Perhaps just because the movie didn't live up to expectations when it came out (although I'm sure it's a cult classic now), that it hasn't motivated any of them (including Woody) to reunite.

i thought it was funny, they said Jim Carrey was their first choice for Big Ern, it would have been a huge mistake, Jim Carrey doesn't have the range. Bill Murray killed it, he was perfect for the Big Ern part

reply

Exactly right, Bill Murray is perfect for the role, in fact, he MAKES the role. Big Ern's commercial for his foundation to help kids without fathers is one of the funniest moments in cinema in the past 25 years.

"Tanqueray and Tab, and keep em coming"

reply

the reason why the tv spot about the foundation worked so well and was funny. is because Murray just played it natural, he absorbed the character, and he was actually loveable in such a sick twisted way, lol, that commercial in Kingpin was funny

As long as we are talking about Big Ern and his Unified Fund involvement:

Big Ern to me is Bill Murray's funniest role. I read where he was tough to get a hold and was not that interested but Randy Quaid got a hold of him and talked him into it. The Farely Bros said Murray basically ignored the written part and wrote his own lines or improvised everything, they said since it was Murray they let him do that. I read Murray chose his wigs to wear or made them and the radical combover. Woody Harrelson said on Letterman he did not really like doing the movie and thought it was dumb and never watched it until a few years later with his son. He loved it when he watched it.

Bill Murray made Kingpin my favorite Farely Bros movie by far. Nobody could have pulled that character off like Murry although I think if Chris Farely in that part could have been really funny.

There are so many memorable lines

Hi, not you, Hi

doing a play by play outloud while Roy is bowling.

I pulled out of her way early

Telling all the women he sees/signs autographs for what room he is in

Calling the lady with big tits back over after she interrupts Roy for a kiss and grabbing her breast as she is leaving.

The whole out of control comb over, the other guy with the white skunk hairdo that they pan the on was funny too.

Loved the commercial as well. Not sure but I do seem to recall the "pinch" to the woman was also improvised.

"Mankind cannot solve the world's problems. Mankind is the problem."

He worked with them on Osmosis Jones.

If Murray and the Farrellys are like me, then hopefully they would have completely forgotten about that one also.

The ironic thing about The Big Lebowski being released not so long after Kingpin, is that it was also made by another team of brothers, the Coens.

I agree, over the test of time, Kingpin is now my favorite Farrelly Brothers movie.

Tell me more about the extended unrated cut. What are the extras that we miss in the regular/theatrical release? I have the original DVD (theatrical release) and I can't remember if it has deleted scenes in the extras, but I may want to see if they have the uncut version since I've upgraded to Blu-ray.
