Why people DISLIKE this movie so much

Before I begin, I want to say that I really liked this movie... so much so that I had the movie's poster up in my college dorm room (not typical, as Cuckoo's Nest, Scarface and Reservoir Dogs posters were more common fare) and was nicknamed "the english patient" by friends.

However, there are many who DETEST this movie (as lampooned on Seinfeld), saying it's too long, too boring and too melodramatic. Back then, I could appreciate why they would say those things (different strokes for different folks). But until I recently re-watched it in full, I didn't understand why.

I think I now understand why...

The foundation of "getting into" and caring about this movie is the love between Almasy and Katherine. Everything that unfolds in the movie hinges on that idea hooking into your consciousness. If you don't believe in their relationship, then nothing else works.

For (American) movie-watchers, however, I believe Almasy and Katherine were much too boring, sexless, cold, and uninteresting to give two-craps about. Almasy is boring, doesn't like to talk, insulting to people in a not flirting way - I wouldn't want to spend 2 minutes with the guy. And, Katherine? A bit annoying, a bit of a prude, not all that attractive (let's be honest... KST looked like she was 50 years old when she was 33) - makeup and soft-lighting do wonders.

Their relationship sparks during an intense reading around the campfire. Really?? Much too blase of a start to this raging love that must sustain a close to three-hour movie.

Ultimately, I think it was miscast. Ralph Fiennes is good looking, but can't really pull off the "brooding" loner guy as well as other guys. Brad Pitt would've exuded that quality much more, but not sure if he could pull off a convincing accent. Plus, by that stage, Pitt had done his share of "brooding" leading men (River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall).

As for KST, please see earlier comments. They needed a much younger and warm-blooded actress... someone who exudes more passion, sex and warmth.

Colin Firth was perfectly cast as the bumbling, "buddy" husband, but the two leads were not. I still loved the movie, but more warm-blooded actors in the lead roles could've made this movie one for the ages (instead of being the "artistic" film that got Elaine Benes angry enough to yell, "Just die already!" in a packed theater).

Well it took the big Oscars from the movie that really deserved them , I am of course referring to the infinitely superiour "Fargo", directed by The Coen Brothers.

Fargo was an excellent tragicomedy. This was extra-fine complex adult drama. No comparison, as good as Fargo was.

While i thought it was cliched and cheesy in parts, i really like this movie, particularly RF' performance. People these days simply cannot have fun at the movies anymore which is why they seem to hate such motion picture fairy tales but guess what, that's what movie magic was about when it all started.

Couldn't agree more, people lately have become very cynic and can't enjoy a film full of romance and kind of melodramatic but like you say, that's how the films started.
The love for gritty and dark preference is something new, there was a time where everyone enjoyed a great romance but now romances like this and titanic are kind of hatted, I bet when this was released and just won the best picture Oscar people were perfectly fine with it it's just now that people hate romances winning best picture.

You assume the only things people DO in a relationship is what is SHOWN. When two people are forced togethet by circumstances in trying conditions, it isn't "sitting around a campfire" that sparks a relationship, it's the time they spent together for days on end that adds up along with sitting around a campfire and 100 other things. btw it was easy to see there was mutual atttaction between them from the start. Almasy's asking her husband whether it is wise to leave her behind in the camp was made because he was clearly smitten with her, and wanted to gauge the response of her husband left specifically with him to feel out how far with he might be able to get. That's the kind of subtlety throughout this film you missed.

As to why some hate this film, my answer is different from yours. They can't handle the depth of human experience. They need more linearity, more superficiality, more explosions, more war and less of all that which makes up a relationship. That and the Englishness of the characters, not that they all were English, the quiet, controlled, closed and unemotional facades of every character, with their mostly English accents, a big turnoff to a lot of people, is too realistic, undecipherable below the surface such people exist atop, and uninteresting for many to care about who cannot and do not want to grasp it. This is why quality adult drama is so hard to come by, too many people are very happy with simple dreck.

I love this movie. Always have. Always will.

It's the perfect representation of the time and is stylized and paced much like films from the 30s and 40s, though the sex scenes are obviously not from that era. The novel the movie is based on is somewhat difficult to read in that it eases in and out of Almasy's dreams and flash backs with little to no transitional narrative like other literary works.

As dramatic and stylized as the film is, the soundtrack adds a romantic and classical ambiance few films have ever achieved. I listen to the soundtrack all the time, especially when I'm writing. Like many classical pieces, it opens my mind to creative avenues without zapping my emotional strength.

A true marvel of a story, The English Patient is the perfect example of an independent production kicking studio slop in the ass!

That's why I call this the racier Casablanca since this one is also a romance set in WWII but with more explict hot scenes lol
Now speaking seriously I also love this movie and I do agree it has the vibe of the classic Hollywood films and well I have to admit I liked the love scenes they looked very tasteful and very well done.

I liked the movie, but I can see why some are not as enthusiastic. It is a slow movie with a difficult plot line to comprehend. I had to watch it a few times, before I could see the story and piece together the various characters. Once I understood the characters and their motivations, I appreciated the film much more.

It is beautifully shot with a touching score. But beyond the romance of the relationships, there is not much drama, and the ending is not a big emotional payoff like in Casablanca, as mentioned earlier.

Finnes and Thomas are excellent, and to those who didn't think KST attractive, I am bewildered. They are both beautiful.

I believe I said this before, but the film is like a Merchant-Ivory production, set in the grandeur of the Egyptian desert.

You can't have characters acting like Americans in 1996 and and have an epic, retro-classic, period piece with a realistic feel.

Probably because the real Laszlo Almasy fought with Germans in WWII, even receiving the Iron Cross for his part in Operation Salaam. And he was gay.

I agree 100 per cent. I felt like Kirsten & Ralph were both miscast. The characters were not particularly likeable so it was hard to care what happened to them. Their romance was not interesting except for how it ended so tragically. I was much more interested in Juliet's character's story.

Through half of the movie - I felt this movie was a total piece of garbage and was dreading it was only half over.

The second half of the movie became interesting, spurred my interest and on its own I can see why people really like this movie but because of the first half - I can see why people hate the movie

Problem is - can't judge a movie on half of it. Combined it is worth watching but doesn't come close to being great or even a must watch.
