Best Austen guy?

Who do you prefer of all of the men in Jane Austen's books?

My top 5 would have to be:

1. Mr. Darcy - Pride and Prejudice
2. Mr. Knightly - Emma
3. Colonel Brandon - Sense and Sensibility
4. Edward Ferrars - Sense and Sensibility
5. Mr. Bingley - Pride and Prejudice

1. Mr. Knightley
2. Colonel Brandon
3. Mr. Darcy

Shocking! Mr. Darcy in third place?! I'm afraid it is true, although I still adore Darcy I find him far too...intense? I'm not sure if that's the right word, I just prefer the natures of Knightley and Brandon.

I also have a soft spot for Captain Wentworth from Persuasion but that's really only due to my Ciaran Hinds obsession.

I just watched Emma today but i had read it a long time ago and it jogged my memory of what happened in it and now im having such a hard time deciding between Mr Knightly and Mr Darcy! I love them both and think they are both brilliant characters and i love the actors who played them!!! So I'm going to have to say that Mr Darcy and Mr Knightly have a tie in first place in my opinion!

Jeremy Northam as Mr Knightley in Emma had the most charisma and charm
Matthew Mcfaddyen as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice was a bit wooden but nevertheless did a good job as portraying a man in love but having to neglect the expectations of him from his family about who he should love

Mr. Knightly- "I rode through the rain... I would ride through worse than that if I could but hear you say that I had but a chance to win you" , that quote there (from the movie) pretty much sums it up... but darcy has some good lines too, but Knightly wins because he is consistantly nice throughout the movie...and he has better hair than darcy..lol (northam vs. macfayden[sp?])
Then Darcy
Then.. Col. Brandon

Darcy has always been my favorite! Then, Knightley, although necessarily a close second for me.

1. Tilney (perhaps it's because of my age, 17, but I really liked him)
2. Knightley
3. Darcy

though I'm not sure how long Darcy is going to be nr. 3, because I've read only 3 of JA's books and seen like 2 and a half of the movies based on her novels, so if Darcy was so easily pushed off the 1. place, then...

What about it, pretzel man, what's your story?

reply

I don't know. This line from Darcy was pretty good, too, making one (a woman, that is) weak at the knees:

"My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on. "

Wow. That's all I have to say.

Mr. Darcy and Mr. Knightley!!!:)

reply

I've already said Mr Knightley, but I've just seen the film of Sense and Sensibility and I thought that Greg Wise who played John Willoughby was gorgeous! So he's on my list, despite the fact that Marianne is left heartbroken by him

reply

Most of the heros are great!

1. Mr. Bingley
2. Mr. Knightley
3. Mr. Tilney
4. Colonel Brandon
5. Captain Wentworth and Mr. Darcy - tied

reply

Mr. Darcy tops them all...but i love Edward Ferrars a well

reply

1. Captain Wentworth- That is nearly my ideal guy.
2. Henry Tilney- Funny, would always make me laugh.
3. Mr. Darcy- Rich, proud, but a good, principles guy
4. Mr. Knightley- Has many good qualities but I fear he would nag me all the time.
5. Edmund Bertram- A boring weakling but nothing to fear at least
6. Edward Ferrars- Same as Edmund, but I'd be afraid he would get close to another girl while with me. Edmund didn't know Fanny loved him, but Edward had to have known how Elinor felt and still led her on.

I guess I'd stick Colonel Brandon at 3.5 because he is a good guy and all but not with any particularly interesting characteristics. Bingley would be tied with him I guess. He's good-humored and everything, but is too easily led by others.

<<I'd say it's neck and neck between Darcy and Knightley. I think it depends on my mood as to who I would pick...right now I'd say Knightley. Other than that, I don't think anyone really sticks out for me...maybe Colonel Brandon from S&S (but that's mostly because I pictured Alan Rickman while reading the book). >>

Agree entirely.
(It is Knightley because of Jeremy Northam's eyes...)
