Best Austen guy?

Who do you prefer of all of the men in Jane Austen's books?

My top 5 would have to be:

1. Mr. Darcy - Pride and Prejudice
2. Mr. Knightly - Emma
3. Colonel Brandon - Sense and Sensibility
4. Edward Ferrars - Sense and Sensibility
5. Mr. Bingley - Pride and Prejudice

I'd say it's neck and neck between Darcy and Knightly. I think it depends on my mood as to who I would pick...right now I'd say Knightly. Other than that, I don't think anyone really sticks out for me...maybe Colonel Brandon from S&S (but that's mostly because I pictured Alan Rickman while reading the book).

reply

1.Mr Darcy, of course
2.Mr Knightley
3.Colonel Brandon
4.Frederic Wentworth
5. Edward Ferrars

Without you, I'm nothing...

reply

yeah...NOBODY beats Mr. Darcy!!!

reply

While I loved Darcy in the book, cinematically, it has got to be Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightley for me.

reply

MR. DARCY!!

And then there is Mr. Knightley and Colonel Brandon.

ANIMAL LOVERS UNITE

reply

Now of course the top two are Mr. Knightley and Mr. Darcy. But trying to ignore the images of the gorgeous Misters Northam and Firth, I think Mr. Knightley would be my number one guy. He was always sensible, and good-natured, and intelligent...and never a snob. Darcy had to have Elizabeth kick him in his pride before he came around. And to paraphrase, he would have stayed that way if not for his 'dearest, loveliest Elizabeth'. So my votes:

Mr. Knightley by a long, long shot
Mr. Darcy (post-Elizabeth, of course, admittedly a complication)
Colonel Brandon

But I agree with previous posters, it's hard to divorce the actors from the roles, when they've done a really memorable job. (There is just something about Alan Rickman....hmmmmmmm)

reply

Mr Knightly
Mr Darcy
Colonel Brandon

I agree with pamjp

reply

nope i love Mr. Knightley !!!!

reply

Colonel Brandon.

reply

1.Mr. Knightley
2.Mr. Darcy
3.Colonel Brandon and Captain Wentworth.

Mr. Knightley is the combination of Mr. Darcy's gentlemeness and Colonel Brandon and Captain Wentworth's devoting passion towards the heroine.

reply

1. Mr. Darcy
2. Mr. Knightly
3. Colonel Brandon
4. Mr. Bingly
5. Edward Ferrars

reply

1. Mr. Knightley - hands down!!!!!
2. Colonel Brandon

...I also really liked Mr. Palmer!! He had such witty lines. If he could, he's be 3rd place:)

These are my top 2 favorites. I am sorry guys, but Darcy towards the bottom of the list. Edward Ferrars woudln't even be on it!(I can hear the gasp of horrors now!)

Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightley - my perfect man...

reply

I am yet to read Pride and Prejudice.
However I really like Edward Ferrars the best.
Then Mr. Knightly.
Colonel Brandon definately should be up there too.

I just saw the new P&P with Matthew Myfadyen (spell?) and I have to say, I loved him! I liked him much better than Colin as Darcy. Now, please note I am HUGE Colin fan and love him, but I thought he was too stern as Darcy. Matthew had a more emotional, vulnerable air that made him more attractive as the lead.
Here is my revised list:

Mr. Knightley
Colonel Brandon
Darcy

The 3 best (in m opinion) Austen heroes ever!

Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightley...my perfect man...

I haven't seen the new Pride and Prejiduce but i have read it and at first Mr.Darcy seem's stuck up but he get's better so my ratting would have to be

1.Mr.Knightly
2.Colonel Brandon
3.Mr.Darcy
That rating is based on personality's not looks.

P.S
Who is Henry Tilney?

reply

Henry Tilney is the hero in Northanger Abbey, it was probably Austen's first completed novel, but wasn't published till after her death. It's a parody of the popular gothic romances of the time, and is quite funny--and very different from her other novels.

Reports of my being alive and well have been grossly exaggerated.

reply

Thanks,I haven't read Northanger Abbey yet,Do they say that it was one of Jane Austen's stranger novel's,Because that's what I've heard. What's the story line of that one anyway?

reply

Yes, that's what I meant by it being far different from her other novels. It's written in the gothic style so lots of "intrigue and mystery," but since it's a also parody, it's a lot more overtly silly than her other works. The story is that a young woman named Catherine of moderate means and a large family is invited to go to Bath with some friends. While in Bath, she meets and becomes friends with a brother and sister, the Tilneys. Their father, an extremely cold and proud man, at first disapproves because he thinks her silly, but then overhears the false report that Catherine has a large fortune. He then gets his daughter to invite Catherine home with them. Catherine has a wild imagination, and the Tilneys' home is an old and decaying Abbey--she starts thinking the Abbey is haunted and that father Tilney murdered his wife and sets out to prove it. I won't give away any more than that. It's quite funny and it's one of my favorites by Austen--but I think it helps to have read gothic novels of the time to know what Austen was parodying.
