Farley vs. Sandler

Who is funnier, Chris Farley or Adam Sandler? While Sandler is very funny I think Farley is far funnier. Who knows what else he would have come up with if he had not died.

Max: You... you killed him?
Vincent: No, I shot him. The bullets and the fall killed him.

I think Farley is much funnier. I think the difference between him and Sandler is that he can play a more likeable person. So much of Sandler's humour comes from anger and Farley seemed almost like a sheepdog who just wanted to please. I would put Tommy boy above every Adam Sandler film.

Of course the fact he died early has meant that he never had to disappoint his audience. Even his weakest efforts like Almost Heroes could not cover up his personality. All you have to do is look at how John Belushi is regarded and compare that to what people think of Dan Akroyd. Quite often the artists who die young become legends.

That was on E! a couple weeks ago! My family was over for my birthday party and we all justsat and watched it, it was so great.

Farley. Sandler couldn't even hold a straight face when he was in Farley's presence.

Really tough to say. I like both of them, but in my opinion, Farley really only had two movies. Tommy Boy was outstanding, and even tho it pailed in comparision, Black Sheep wasn't bad either. I think Beverly Hills Ninja and Almost Hereos were both pretty poor.

Sandler on the other hand has never delivered anything as good as Tommy Boy, but even early on he showed more consistency. Neither Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison was as good as Tommy Boy, but they were both far superior to anything else Farley did.

So I would say that til this day, Farley still maintains claim to the funniest movie over Sandler.... but I still think Sandler would have had the more successful career overall.

I like Chris Farley more, but the people up there saying he was fat and dumb are just kind of retarded. Yeah, he was fat. But just because his characters were ignorant or clumsy, they weren't dumb. His character Tommy is clearly lacking when it comes to book smarts like Richard says, but he's got a business kind of genius. Chris' character Mike in Black Sheep was also not very "book smart". But he had a political brilliance in paying attention to the voters' numbers and noticing that there were more voters listed than there actually were. Chris actually didn't like Beverly Hills Ninja because he thought it made him look stupid. He was right, if you watch the movie and compare Haru to Tommy and Mike, Haru was just dumb all around. If it wasn't for Chris playing Haru the movie would've bombed horribly, but he managed to save the movie. So please, don't call him an idiot. That is *not* how he would want to be remembered. I admit that I'm biased on my opinion on who is better, but alot of people are going to be. Dead celebrities always get more credit and recognition than living ones when they're of the same "caliber" (I think the better word would be status). Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain are more familiar to people than Kirk Hammett because they're dead and Kirk isn't. I guess that's just how things work. It's the same with artists, alot weren't sucessful until they died. So in reality, this isn't really a fair question. Don't go and kill Sandler so that they're evened out, though. I liked Anger Management.

It's hard to say I love Chris Farly movies. Think about this have you seen a film with them in it you hated?

Adam Sandler is funny, but Chris Farley has better mannerisms i guess? I don't know how to describe it. Basically, Chris wins by a landslide!!

"Fat guy in a little coat"

David Spade was speaking not too long ago in an interview and he would say how whenever he was in a bad mood around Farley, Chris would do the "fat guy in a little coat" routine and it would always make Spade laugh. He was like "I could never hold on to coats around that guy" I just think it was funny that they put that private joke of theirs into the movie and share it with us. I'm from Farley's home state of WI and people here miss him - especially in Madison.

reply

You can sort of tell in the movie that it was a private joke between them, just the way those two clicked in all the movies they did together, "fat guy in a little coat" is a running joke for me and a mate of mine, i've ripped so many coats when drunk doing the same routine! The funniest bit in tommy boy is just after he gets hit in the face with the plank and the waitress says"jeaus what happened to your face" theres just something about that scene, him sitting there with that huge red mark on his face "classic" as for whos funnier farley or sandler, farley by a long way

I'd say Chris Farley! But honestly, we will never know what Chris' work would be like if he were alive today.

I loved Adam Sandler in 6th and 7th grade, but now his movies plain stink. I didn't mind Anger Management and Mr. Deeds, but I REFUSE to see Click just by viewing the trailers. I did like Punch Drunk Love quite a bit. It seems like people either love or hate that one. I thought it was much cooler than some of his recent comedies.

Definetly Chris Farley i just think that chris is the man and he is a lot funnier than adam sandler hands down.
i think that he would have gone on to do better things with his acting career if he would of have sobered up.

reply

farley is way funnier than sandler. and mini boot sandler had schneider so he did have a double actor and he also had the two gay guys from big daddy

reply

Chris Farley is hilarious! He cracks me up whenever I see him. Adam Sandler is also funny. I find Farley far funnier because of his style. He's off the wall and crazy. Sandler is more chil like in his humor. He hasn't quite grown up yet. He's a bit over the top and foul mouthed whereas Farley is just plain CRAZY.

reply

Farley, because he's more insane that Sandler. Plus, for some reason, I don't really like Sandler that much.

Consider this: There would be no opinions without facts.

I like Adam Sandler little bit more but i agree he should do more with his talent.

i can think of plenty of actors funnier than sandler. i can't think of anyone funnier than farley and there's only a few actors in the last 20 years that were in farley's league. a bright star that burned out way too quickly and still saddens me to this date........the original matt foley scene on snl with spade and christina applegate........classic farley

Chris Farley, hands down. Normally I don't like slapstick, but he had such a great heart and such a pure way about him that whatever he did cracked me up. Tommy Boy seems funnier every time I see it.

Whoever said David Spade was never the same after Farley's death is right. He brought out the sweeter, gentler side of Spade, and I doubt anyone will ever have that effect on him again.

Both Farley and Sandler are great. I know they appeared in each other's movies. But I wish they co-starred together. That would have been awesome. I was a little surprised Sandler became so popular. I didn't think he was that funny on Saturday Night Live. That must have been because the SNL writing was horrible.

reply

Both were/are great. They were both good friends of each other and loved one another like brothers. Sandler I'm sure misses him like crazy like Spade does.

They were both great on SNL during their times there (they practically carried the show [which many hate to admit btw,] from Fall 1993-Spring 1995 before being forced out.) And when they went solo they both had stellar debuts. T Boy was great it managed to be a slapstick film but also a buddy film and it had a good heart to it. You could feel a charm that this movie had and you could see how fun it must have been to make it. Billy Madison was just Sandler at his *beep* best, all of the other cast members were either in awe or disgusted by him trying to figure it out. Not the best film but it's oddly good if you want a fun ride.

Their follow ups depend on the film. Farley didn't really have a solid follow up. Black Sheep was a mess due to Paramount forcing it on Spade and Farley plus P Spheeris was in a rivalry with Spade the entire time. B Hills Ninja was fun in parts but it was stupid, Chris tried really hard to make it worthwhile and in that way it works. Barely remember Almost Heros besides it being meh at best. Only other solid role he had was in Dirty Work with Norm McDonald, he was epic in that movie. He showed he still had it then too bad it was his last. Wonder what would have happened if lived? He prob would have done Shrek which prob would have been a hit still. Then what would have followed? Too bad we will never know.

Sandler on the other hand improved in his next several follow ups. Happy Gilmore was far superior to BM in a lot of ways and has aged better, Bulletproof was a good buddy flick, Waterboy was a great football film, his first two Berrymore movies were good and Click was his best serious yet comedy film. He had a nice decent little run there for a little while before he got lazy.

It's apples and oranges really. Both are awesome and deserve their dues. They have their low points sure but their quality work is solid stuff.
