Halloween 6 vs. H20 - which is better?

So which one do you prefer, H6 or H20? H6 has Paul Rudd's first role, Donald Pleasance's last appearance as Dr. Loomis, and (in the producer's cut) the most logical and epic explanation for why Michael is evil, with his connection to the Thorn cult and the Druids. H20 has Jamie Lee Curtis's return, Steve Miner's directing, and a storyline linking the movie to the first two. Also it has some nice tributes to classic horror (ie Janet Leigh's obvious cameo reference to Psycho) and was written by Scream scribe Kevin Williamson. I think that H20 is a better made movie and when I was younger I said H20 was the better overall of the two. But watching them together now I tend to prefer on a pure entertainment level Halloween 6, particularly the Producer's Cut. It has a more gothic quality than H20, and watching a "before he was famous" Paul Rudd and a "near his deathbed" Donald Pleasence lends a strange nostalgic air to it all. H20 feels like they tried a bit too hard to live up to Scream's recent success and feels a bit too self-aware of Jamie's celebrated return to the franchise, which hampers the natural narrative flow of the story. And the Dawson's Creek/WB approved teens are annoying. Plus H20 unfortunately has no Donald Pleasence and his absense is sorely noticed (although the intro commendably pays tribute to him). Halloween 6 has no pretensions than just being a well-oiled slasher potboiler and is more enjoyable and creepy as a result I think. H20 has the better production values and prestige but I think Halloween 6 is just more creepy fun to me.

Curse isn't very good, but H20 is absolute $hit.

I prefer Halloween 6 to H20 by quite a bit.

It was fun to see Nancy Stephens back as Marion, and while Josh Hartnett, Adam Hann-Byrd, Adam Arkin and LL Cool J gave good performances, I didn't find Laurie particularly interesting in this movie and at times the movie dragged...that scene with the mom and daughter at the restroom is pure filler and her odd choice in vehicles was bizarre and distracting. Setting it in California robbed the movie of seeing an appropriate late fall setting, and the private school itself was bland and uninteresting. Michael acts like he is literally drunk throughout the movie, perhaps ironically since Laurie is now the alcoholic. I thought Michelle Williams' character Molly to be about as interesting as wallpaper...was disappointed that her character survived.

Halloween 6 has great atmosphere and captures the feel of Halloween. The characters are interesting, the locations are memorable and creepy. Donald Pleasance, Paul Rudd, Marianne Hagan, Mitch Ryan, Kim Darby and JC Brandy all give good performances. For me, the only really short-sighted move was killing off Jamie Lloyd (and of course not bringing back Danielle Harris). The music is also miles better than H20's rip-off Scream score. I love when Mrs. Blankenship tells Danny the origin of Halloween, and Michael is great!

I am mostly referring to the Producer's Cut of Halloween 6. I'd say the theatrical version of Halloween 6 is worse than H20.

H20 was better all the way.

H20 is slicker and has less issues but as a film it's quite middling. It plays it quite straight and takes very little risks. As others have noted it does lack the 'Halloween' atmosphere of many other entries.

I think I prefer H6 these days. An uneven film with greater strengths and weaknesses compared to H20.

What if Halloween H20 was a SEQUEL to Halloween 6?

Halloween H20 acted as a soft reboot for the franchise back in 1998, choosing to ignore the events of Halloweens 4-6. But what if they hadn't made that choice? Happy Halloween!

I'm a bit weird about it. :)

H6 Producer's Cut > H20 > H6 theatrical cut.

The Producer's Cut feels like a "classic era" Halloween movie, whereas the theatrical cut feels more like the "MTV/grunge version," more "next-gen" than the classic era, a proto-H20, I guess.

H20 ushered in a full-fledged new era, where Michael Myers became an A-list/mainstream slasher.
