The Schumacher cut of Batman Forever is confirmed to exist, and a couple of details about this darker version have been revealed over the years.

170 minutes? Now I'm even more interested.

reply

Out of the 80s/90s foursome of Bat-films, this is the one I'm the least interested in seeing an extended version of (save for maybe a few more scenes of Sugar & Spice). I'd rather see an extended cut of Batman & Robin.

reply

It's not just extended, it's a darker tone. I can't remember who it said it (maybe one of the writers), but he said it's a completely different tone. It wasn't comedic.

reply

I read that they made The Riddler more ruthless. I don't like that idea. There are deleted scenes in the earlier films, and even Batman & Robin, I'd rather see restored.

The trope of making the male nerd a nasty piece of work has been done to death, and, if anything, we need to see a cut that lightens and tones down Edward Nygma.

reply

So I take it this will differ from the 'Red Book' cut?

First reactions to the elusive Joel Schumacher cut of Batman Forever tentatively reveal the updated runtime for the definitive edition of the movie.

I haven't seen this film for over 20 years but if Schumacher's cut was released I'd definetly watch it.

Again, haven't seen it for so long so my memory of it's not great but I remember thinking there were some good stuff in it.

It felt as though Val Kilmer took it seriously, I remember liking Bruce Wayne questioning his identity, and thinking Robin's family's death was done well and just as dramatic as any scene from Tim Burton's films at their darkest.

What I really remember not liking was Gotham itself. I preferred Burton's gothic look, and Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey constantly hamming it up. But it'd be interesting to see Schumacher's "darker" cut.

I assume WB will release the director’s cut in 2025 for the 30th anniversary
