Wait. This movie was nominated for best picture??
I totally didn't realize this until now. I saw the movie when it came out but didn't pay attention to the Oscars then. Was it that slow of year that a children's movie was nominated??

shareWell, being the best children's movie ever done, with some Pixar and Ghibli gems, makes surely a good contender for the nomination.
shareThis movie is great. It's a movie kids can see and adults too... so IT'S NOt onlye a children movie... And well everytime i see the movie i just see how well is done, the acting is really good.. and different to a lot of movies that have been nominated to best movie, this movie has a message

Babe should have won.
The world is your lobster.
Was nominated over Casino. Something is really rotten in Hollywood.
shareDon't forget Heat. That movie is so epic, visceral, and a powerhouse with Pacino and DeNiro and it was steeped over by all those biopics and period pieces. Haven't watched Babe in a long time, but I really liked it as a kid. It was rare to pick a family favorite as a nominee, so it really made a unique inclusion that year. I still would prefer if Heat was nominated anyway given how that's one serious film for the adults and most of the other films are just typical Hollywood pitches.
shareit's truly a great movie. I mean im not usually into movies like this but this one really resonated with me. That being said, I was surprised, even then being so young, that it got nominated. not because it didn't deserve but it was the first time in my memory seeing a film like that get a best picture nomination. At the time i wasn't aware that beauty and the best had a nomination back in 1991. So it was kind of cool to see these 4 other "serious" nominees and to see this pleasant little light film on that list as well. i actually wanted it to win and even at 27 i find it to be a great film. really takes me back to being a kid
shareC'mon, the movie was great. I enjoy it everytime. It really is like poetry watching it. It's like Forest Gump, once you start watching it. It is really hard to stop.

You forgot about "Leaving Las Vegas", "Dead Man Walking", "Nixon", "Rob Roy", "The American President", "Before Sunrise", "The Bridges of Madison County", "Clueless", etc. 1995 was a great year for movies. The OP is a moron for saying that it was a slow year for movies. It was the exact opposite. The fact that Babe got in when a lot of great films didn't. Showed how great the movie was.
shareOf course it was nominated. I think it's a beautiful little film with a very uplifting message and a lot more depth than you might assume, given its "kids' movie" status and short running time.
There are too many great scenes for me to pick just one favorite, but the one that tends to pop into my mind first (well, aside from the ending: "That'll do, pig. That'll do.") is the one in which Farmer Hoggett is nursing the sick and depressed Babe. He starts to softly sing "If I Had Words" to cheer up Babe and express how important the pig is to him, and before long he is exuberantly dancing for his beloved pig, completely unconcerned with how foolish he might appear. It's absolutely lovely.

Wow, I agree! However, I found Apollo 13 to be pretty amazing, but I would pick Babe over Braveheart on any given day!!
Inglorious Basterds is one of my favourites, but it would've been a weird BP winner I think :) Same as JFK
Fate 1995 posted:
"I can name at least a few children's movies that should have won best picture:
Babe (1995) - Over Bravheart, Apollo 13, The Postman, and Sense and Sensibility"
Il Postino was nomimated rather than The Postman (Costner). Babe was best.
"Hugo (2011) - Over The Artist,The Descendents, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, and War Horse"
Hugo was very good. I gotta go with The Help.
"Up (2009) - Over The Hurt Locker, Avatar, District 9, An Education, The Blind Side, Inglorious Basterds, Up in the Air, A Serious Man, and Precious"
Up also very good, as were all these. I say Precious or Blind Side.
"Beauty and the Beast (1991) - Over The Silence of the Lambs, JFK, Bugsy, and The Prince of Tides"
Beauty and the Beast is classic. The Silence of the Lambs is epic!
It was really strange to me that it was nominated. It was not THAT good.
It cops out in several ways. The domestic dispute between the dogs is just suddenly resolved. The cooked goose turns out to be one the audience has never met and not the one that is a regular character.
Plus Babe needs some silly code word at the end when it was his kindness that made him a success with the sheep in the beginning. It's a really fun movie, but any aspirations it has of being more that a children's movie are eventually abandoned.
Don't get me wrong. There's still a lot to recommend about thus film. The climax is so well done that I don't think you can really describe it to anyone. I don't think there's anyway to make someone understand how elated the audience feels at the end. The way that scene is put together is just masterful. I don't know how that got they much drama out of an event where everyone watching can pretty much guess what is about to happen.

1) It is really strange to me to think it wouldn't be nominated.
2) No, it was/is "THAT good."

"Several ways!?" You named **two** ways, not "several." That cost you some
credibility right there. Here's another lie by you that cost you
credibility: The domestic dispute between the dogs was **not** "suddenly
resolved." **Pay attention to the film and go back and watch the events
and the story's time line about the resolution.
Plus Babe needs some silly code word at the end when it was his
kindness that made him a success with the sheep in the beginning.

Your comment about Babe's kindness does **not** apply here.
These different
weren't the farmer's sheep, and Babe didn't have a rapport with them.
As there
was a crime crunch, the code was needed right away, not to take the
time to get through stupid unfamiliar sheep.
There never were aspirations of it not being more than a children's
movie. It maintains its dual role as entertainment to children and
adult viewers, and it maintains its moral themes of showing of
fitting in, ostracism, loyalty, compassion, grudges/scorn, having
convictions of one's ability despite the contempt of others,
vindication, and gratitude, among many examples.
Don't get me wrong. There's still a lot to recommend about thus film.

michaelward15, you post is very inaccurate, dishonest, and ignorant.
Country + RAP = CRAP
Country + ROCK = CROCK
Thanks for the rebuttal. You saved me the trouble. No need to do name-calling, though; that just weakens your position.
