Wait. This movie was nominated for best picture??

I totally didn't realize this until now. I saw the movie when it came out but didn't pay attention to the Oscars then. Was it that slow of year that a children's movie was nominated??

why not? the movie was incredibly well done.. I don't see why theres something wrong if a children's movie is considered for nominations.

Why shouldn't it have been? It was a great film. It shouldn't matter that it was aimed at children. I suppose you think this year must be a slow year as well since Toy Story 3 has been, deservedly, nominated for Best Picture.

reply

I am not sure it was aimed at children. I think it was aimed at everyone. I didn't see it until the Oscars was over that year. I rented it because it got nominated and I saw a clip of it at the Oscars and was fascinated.

it was amazing how they did the voice of the two dogs and Babe. simply amazing.
I agree it could have easily won. but Braveheart was also good too.

Apple and oranges. you can't compare them.

Babe was probably the most deserving nominee (and in my opinion, 1995's best film), and I still don't get why they didn't nominate Seven, Get Shorty (I recall correctly) and Dead Man Walking

reply

Braveheart won, the other nominees were Apollo 13, Il Postino, and Sense and Sensibility.

Babe should have won. Not even close, really.

I don't even see Babe as a children's movie.

reply

Me neither, it is a movie children can watch, but it's a mature, really mature one.

reply

I actually don't think I would let a child watch it. It's VERY intense at times--thinking specifically of when Hogget takes Babe into the woodshed with the gun. I literally cannot even watch that, I can't imagine a child could.

reply

Give me a break. So you don't let kids watch Old Yeller?

Not only did Babe deserve to be one of 5 films nominated but so did another "children's film", Toy Story (it wasn't but should've been). The greatest travesty that year was that "Hoop Dreams" wasn't even nominated for Best Doco.

There had been so many disappointments over the years regarding the Academy's choices that I don't think much about it anymore. A great movie will remain great and doesn't need an oscar to make it great. Babe is one such great movie.

This is a great movie, and should have won Best Picture.

The script is universal, the acting was amazing, and ground-breaking techniques in Visual Effects were created to make it look like the animals "talk". You kids take all this for granted today.

I don't see how anyone can be surprised that this movie got a nomination after watching it. It's an amazing film irrespective of whether you're an adult of child.
