Vegetarian

I saw this film a few years ago and instantly became vegetarian (and still am 3 years on!)

I was just wondering how many others have converted to vegetarianism as the result of 'Babe'?

reply

I'm afraid I wasn't able to read all the pages of this thread, but who else became a vegetarian as a result of Babe?

...James Cromwell (Farmer Hoggett). This is absolutely true.

reply

Um, not quite true, bsbgirl305. He became a vegetarian much earlier, in 1974, though he did take the further step of becoming a vegan while playing Farmer Hoggett.

He's not really a good example of someone who's mind has been changed on the subject by the film, though (if that's what we're getting at). He has long been an activist in the promotion of alternative causes, and his decision to become a vegetarian twenty years before he made the film was political and ethical more than emotional - he was, if you like, already on a particular journey when he made 'Babe', and the film merely propelled him further along it.

I actually started eating more meat after this movie. I tried duck for the first time because of this film and I gotta say...it's delicious!!

I don't think its unnatural for people to eat meat, but I do feel that while Hollywood tries to romanticize about animals, love, war and so forth, nothing compares to the reality of the situation.

in real life, there are always problems and issues when finding true love and its never ever as simple and quaint as movies make it, especially old movies. War is not something for boys to dream about because it can be a horrible hell. and while we may all want to live at harmony with animals, the truth is the world can be a sinful, cruel place and there is no such thing. sure you can adopt an animal, raise livestock and do your best to take care of the earth and the animals, but that wont stop other more wicked people from killing other poor animals, destroying the earth and so on. evil will always exist until the Lord comes back. Then, finally, the lion will sleep with the lamb. but until then, you can simply do what you can. I personally don't have a problem eating meat. its not good to eat it all the time, but its certainly not going to kill you if you do. in the Bible, people were slaughtering calfs and other animals not only for sacrificing in the Old Testmanet, but for meals as well. that's what they did with the sacrifices.

anyway, this movie was touching and great but I did not become a vegetarian lol.

Realism, Remakes and Unnecessary Sequels are ruining movies!

I was a already vegetarian from a young age but went Vegan soon after watching this film and Charlottes Web as the Dairy Industry is just as evil as the meat and fishing industries, best decision ever :)

Everyone has a right to twinkle & shine like a star

reply

Yup, funny, isn't it, how all the evil people of the world go into Dairy, Meat & Fishing industries....while all the saintly ones become vegetable and grain producers?

It must be such a comfort to be able to divide the world so neatly into the good guys and the bad guys, and know exactly which is which. Personally I've always found matters - and people - so much more complicated. Perhaps that's why I don't twinkle & shine like a star.

Erm, I was having pork chops while watching it. Didn't quite realize the ironic horror of it all until halfway through...

Still a carnivore for life, though.
