I have never got the raves for this movie, and I don't think I ever will.
I even watched it twice, to see what the fuss was all about. Nothing. Just a bland prison movie with more than a few implausible elements, and a ridiculously whimsical plot.
A fantasy for nerds who are terrified of getting into trouble and going to jail.
Very overrated definitely. I mean I prefer the true stories like Escape from Alcatraz. This film is based on a Stephen King book, so of course it's overhyped.

shareI think context is really important. By today's standards, I can see why many would call it overrated, but for 1994, it was doing something incredibly innovative for a prison-based film and a drama film. Jurassic Park is pretty dated also, but you can still watch it and appreciate what they were trying to achieve in 1993, which is why it's still considered a classic.
