why dont some people find mickey and mallory likeable?

I mean sure they were some sadistic freaks, but they were also sort of victims of society like most killers. It's a weak thing to turn to violence because of all your troubles but these people tend to feel that they have no real sense of family and if their own family is *beep* up, why should they care about anyone else? After awhile, you sort of become misanthropic so this kinda thing is easy for them. But I did find Mickey and Mallory's characters likeable; I mean the affection they had for eachother, him carrying her out of the snake pit and the scene where he comes to her cell. I mean, didn't you guys find that the tad bit touching? I gotta say this film is a romance in it's own rights and I liked this kind of romance far better than that whimpy the notebook crap.

And I am glad they got away in the end. There are people who wanted to see them die. Psshh, I wanna see YOU die!

People will not find them likable if they are able to resist media brainwashing well.

If we can be manipulated within two hours by a film to root for the two main characters who happen to be complete psychos, what are years of TV and news doing to our brains?

I didn't find them likeable at all. Neither of them have any redeeming features, apart from the fact that they are 'fearless', as manifest in their killing of people. Mallaroy's singing is annoying, although she is supposed to be cast as some exotic, undiscovered singing prodigy (popular concept back in the 1990s!), and I think all empathy was lost for Micky after killing the Indian.

In some ways, the film has dated (but, is still a great film), but in another way, it is still relevant today, as an exaggeration of lost, self entitled, and disenfranchised people.

I didn't feel sorry for them & this is why-

Mickey & Mallory are smart & coherent enough to know they come from fcked up families & backgrounds. It is also made clear they ARE NOT insane as they are aware murder & crime is wrong & that there are consequences for their actions.

They realize the horrific things they are doing is wrong & by having children (seen at the end of the film) they are just continuing the cycle of hate.

Has anyone ever found murderers in REAL life "likeable" in any way at all? And can one do so, regardless of their history, if they kill innocent people who don't deserve to die? And what if they killed someone close to you, wouldn't it be normal to want to see them die?

P.S. Whilst we are on this subject, plenty of people found "Bonnie & Clyde" (1967) to be very likeable, and Faye Dunaway was incredibly gorgeous in that film, and we were apparently supposed to, despite having them killed innocents as well, mostly for robbery-related motives - and even more than that, the movie itself, whilst not only considered a classic by many, may have been in some ways an inspiration for NBK also.

And hardly is there a critic or an audience member who SERIOUSLY complains that the movie "glorifies violence and killings" and makes the cute couple, Bonnie and Clyde, especially Bonnie, so appealing to people, all over the world. (Legendary late French singer Serge Gainsbourg even had a song "Bonnie & Clyde" as a devotion to them.)

P.P.S. In awe of the character's gorgeous looks, I wonder how many people after seeing that film said as a joke - "She" or even "They can shoot me anytime", lol. :)

i dont understand it but, yeah - lots of them seem to get married in prison to crazy bitches who like murderers

They engaged in some questionable behavior.

Mass murder never decorated anyone I guess, lol. :)

I think the people who would cheer Mickey and Mallory are exactly the people that the film is satirizing.

Having a shitty childhood is not an excuse, or even a rational reason, for becoming a murderer. The couple in this movie are dangerous psychopaths who need to be exterminated like cockroaches.

I didn't particularly like how they continued to kill for little or no reason. Offing Mallory's father was one thing, but they just kept at it. Hoping the scene at the end implies they had moved on from that life.
