Did he HAVE to hang the dog?

I mean, I understand him having to "put it out of its misery", but was it necessary to string it up by it's collar and shoot it while it was dangling?

That scene is difficult to watch.

The reason he had to kill the dog is because it had already had it's first taste of blood. It was a killer now and would be dangerous to keep around. It also is a symbol of his friend and of violence in general.

The fact that chucky and the dog were both "pinned" when they died is a very intresting parallel.

And it is funny that I see TWO threads about the silly Dog when a THREE kids were killed. The Dog Got off better than the girl who had the luxury of choking and dying slow. Its retarded that people care more for an animal than human life.

Fresh was going to be sent away who would have cared for the dog? Rather than him suffering slow, like the little girl, he just put him down.

Its funny I never hear people crying about Old Yeller catching a buckshot....

BTW this movie is EXCELLENT! I cant believe Ive never heard of it before, Samuel Jackson plays in the greatest movies and the Parallel with chess is pure brilliance.

ROSCOE IS ALIVE!

Don't get too upset over the dog. It was only an animated prop used for the killing scene. I remember hearing about complaints to the SPCA because people thought that it was a real dog.

Someone that I was working with years ago on a different movie gave me the actual dog that was used in the movie. It was made of wood, fiberglass and material. Really cool and quite convincing looking. I have it stored in my attic right now and I intend to restore it. Some of the material is loose and it is in need of re-gluing and a little bit of cleaning up. It has cables running through the leash which made his legs kick and his tail wag.

I never saw the movie until someone gave me Roscoe. It was disturbing but I think I see the point that the director was trying to get across.

I think he killed the dog cause he wanted to get rid of anything that made him
remind him of chuckie.

He hung the dog nd shot it for a number of reason the dog had tasted blood and was a killer and coudlnt be tamed .Fresh coudlnt take care of the dog so he most likely would have to give it to someone else who would use it to kill another dog violently or get killed himself or seriosuly injured repeatedly.if he sent it to the animal shelter or humane socety they would put him to sleep and he decided to do it himself because of the fact that in order to stop the dog from getting in another fight e suggested kinda out of desperation that chuckie work with him which indirectly caused his death so it was a anger release thing to .

I feel that Fresh hangs the dog,to keep him stable. Fresh thinks about what he does. Shooting a dog recklessly would have been messy. He hung the dog to get the precise shot.

reply

Its very simple, He hung the dog because the dog was trained to kill and would never be a good "pet" to anyone. A lot shelters do this if they see a animal is viloent...they my not hang them and shoot them. But they do "put them down". I'm not understand one thing, all the people that died in the movie and everyone is worried about the dog?? I loved this movie its very thought provoking.

ever try shooting a potentially violent dog that isn't tied down or hung up to something? They get kind of pissed once that first bullet hits them.

"That scene is difficult to watch."

This movie was difficult to watch. But the acting was superb, particularly the young actors. The story might have been a bit 'fetched' -- in that I doubt a kid could really pull off such a con on seasoned drug pushers. (They would have killed 'Fresh' for fun -- for target practice -- at the first slip -- when he's defending himself, and manages to convince one supplier to kill one pusher (forgive me, I've forgotten the characters' names ...). They would have believed him well enough to kill the pusher, but would have killed him, as well, just to cover all bases. But, if one sets aside that point, and follows the story as truth, otherwise, then it was a moving, sad, but ultimately rewarding (from a 'hero' flick point of view) film. Fresh is most assuredly a hero.

To answer the specific question, yes; he had to immobilize the dog, and hanging it worked well, far better than tying it to any post, where it would still have ground under its feet. In slaughtering an animal, you want their feet off the ground, before you attempt to kill it.

But it was clearly a difficult thing for Fresh; to first have watched Chucky, one of his few 'friends', force what was Fresh felt to be a likeable and friendly pit bull to perform in the fight arena; then to watch as he, himself, got Chucky involved in something that clearly was going to get Chucky killed (he had none of the quiet wisdom of Fresh -- and Fresh knew that ...), then to actually watch Chucky be killed. Indeed, although he may eventually mature into a psychopath, himself, the movie seemed to portray Fresh as a wise individual with a good chance of escape, via his own efforts, from the lowlife around him, and thus redemption.

If the question is really, from a directorial and story point of view, 'Did he have to kill the dog', the answer is yes. For both the practical reasons (no way to care for the dog, and unwilling to turn it loose on the street) and symbolic reasons (both as a form of 'toughening' him to be able to pull off the 'con' he was about to try, for all the 'emotional' reasons tied to his friend 'Chucky', and for the chess piece metaphor. All work for the story, and for the message.

I thought the acting and directing were excellent, and excepting the one 'not likely' situation (that Fresh would have survived, himself, the execution of the pusher), the story was well written, the dialog terrific. I only just caught this flick, on late night cable, and I'm amazed to find its already over 10 years old! Plays like tomorrow's news, imho -- which is way sad, too.

What the world needs now are MORE SQUIRRELS! Then there would be fewer NUTS running around, loose!

I didn't see this mentioned in the thread.

Fresh has a conversation with his sister where she says that if you love any dog roaming street it's worthless to say you love another person because you love anything!

So I thought he was proving to himself that he really loved his sister so he could go through with his plan even though you tell he really did love that dog.
