is this not a tad overrated because of Lee's death ?

I think so

I saw it the first time a few months ago and thought it aged mostly alright. The narration is silly and some scenic shots look fake today. But Lee certainly showed the chops for a decent leading man and Top Dollar remains one of Michael Wincott's best performances. Also compared with a lot of r rated comic book movies today, this version of Detroit they created feels much grimier and nastier.

Honestly, no. This would have been his break out role if he'd lived.

I agree with Wint3rFir3 - had he lived and everything about the release and reception of this movie had been "normal," it would have been his breakout role, as it was sufficiently different from his previous movies to showcase him as capable of more.

It's a shame that the death has overshadowed everything in everyone's perception.

The movie was getting a lot of buzz around Hollywood before Lee's death. Keep in mind, Lee was not really famous when he was cast in this movie, despite who his father was. Most people had no idea Bruce Lee had a son until this movie started shooting.

One of my fave films and is a product of the era it was made in. To be honest I didn't know it was hyped up that much even at the time.

reply

I don’t think so it’s a pretty damn good movie imo.

It's probably revered more because of his death and might be a bit inflated, but it's a great action movie even without knowing that.

In a time when there were virtually no comic book/superhero movies and when they certainly were not high profile or the cash cow they are now The Crow was exceptional and groundbreaking. Is it a perfect movie? No. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it overrated? No way, not even close. If anything at a 7.6 it is underrated. It boasts an amazing star-making performance of Brandon Lee, one of the best movie soundtracks of all-time, some very edgy action sequences for its day and it had heart. If you were to remove the fact that Brandon Lee was accidentally killed on set during production this film would still be highly rated if not more so. The Dark Knight would still be an awesome film even if Heath Ledger didnt die wouldnt it?

By some people maybe but I think it’s pretty awesome!
