Reasons why 'BHC III' stunk

1. Killing off Todd= Todd was an integral part of the "BHC" franchise and he had a key chemistry with Axel. Killing him was like killing off M from the James Bond movies. Bad idea.

2. Scripted humor= You can easily tell the difference between scripted and improvised humor. The humor here was very corny and predictable. Eddie failed to do what he did best in the first two films.

3. John Ashton and Ronny Cox's absence= What was the point of making this film without them two? Now it'd be hard to bring them back for a 4th when they retired in this film.

4. John Landis= He is not an action director, he focuses more on humor than anything else.

5. Very childish plot= I gotta say that the screenplay was a bit inmature and didn't measure up to the first two.

The main reason why this movie stinks is that terrible Amusement Park story. That set the corny tone for the entire movie. Why the hell?

reply

I knew that something was wrong when we see Eddie Murphy actually pay to get into the theme park. It seemed like by the time that he got to the third movie, he forgot that Axel Foley is pretty much like Bugs Bunny if he were a profane street cop from Detroit. In other words, the Axel from the first two movies would've talked, weaseled, and schemed his way into Wonderworld.

reply

Bad setting. The theme park was just stupid.

I can kind of see where they wanted to go with the theme park setting. Steven E. de Zuza wrote the screenplay for this as well as Die Hard. So the concept was supposed to be in theory and on paper, "Die Hard in a theme park". I think with the right director, script, and budget, they could've made that concept work.

Unfortunately, instead of this claustrophobic, edge of your seat, dynamite action film like Die Hard, where the hero is trapped and has to battle his way out, Beverly Hills Cop III is more about the investigation. I think that people just saw the theme park concept as too cheesy for something like Beverly Hills Cop and passed.

A Die Hard scenario could have worked. Better scripts more than anything would have helped.

The other issues with the theme Park setting in BHC are,

Foley's boss being killed at the start is very serious and the movie starts off quite bleak as well so the Theme Park just contrasts badly against that.

The Theme Park could really be anywhere so I for one never really thought of him as being BH like the other two films.

Lack of humour. It's a Theme Park and they never really have fun with that.

The whole film just feels desperate. Serge making an appearance is silly with how they did it. Even Reinhold's character is wasted.

Just a bad film overall.

Bringing Bronson Pinchot back as Serge to me, seemed to be compensation for the absence of John Ashton and Ronny Cox (Sgt. Taggert and Captain Bogomil respectively). Plus, like you said Eddie Murphy for the most part, unlike in the prior two, decided to play things straight and not ab-lib (since he felt that Axel had matured in the seven years since BHCII and should no longer be this brash, loud-mouthed, hot-shot cowboy cop). So Serge, who was considered one funniest parts and a scene stealer from the first movie, was there to make up for the lack of comedy. Serge as he is portrayed here, seems like he's meant to be Q to Axel Foley's James Bond.

The film should not have been made. Like some other Eddie Murphy sequels
Nutty Professor 2 the Klumps
Doctor Doolittle 2
Coming 2 America
All pointless and bad

Come on now… Hot babes hold a machine gun that can microwave a personal pizza is pretty top-shelf for me.

reply

This is a small reason but BHCIII unlike the prior two ones didn't have a dynamic opening theme like Glenn Frey's "The Heat is On" or Bob Seger's "Shakedown" to really pump you up and set the mood for the movie.

Why Is Beverly Hills Cop III the Lowest-Rated Movie of the Franchise?

A fourth Beverly Hills Cop is finally on the way, but the series' third movie was a major disappointment that put the franchise on ice for years.

reply

I actually prefer Beverly Hills Cop 3 way more than Beverly Hills Cop 2.

Both the 1st (the best movie) and the 3rd movies bring me a smile and make me laugh.

The second movie just bores me.
