Angela's so selfish!

All she does is complain about how her life is that much worse than everyone else's and doesn't even acknowledge what's going on around her.

Like, a gun goes off at school and all she can think about is whether or not the school thinks she's a slut. How unrealistic!

Duh, she's a 15 year old girl. Even the sweetest, smartest teenage girls are somewhat self-absorbed the way Angela is. I think this is a totally realistic portrayal of life as a teenager. It's like when she said Anne Frank was "lucky" for being trapped in an attic with a guy she really liked... It sounds absurd from an adult perspective, but my teenage self could absolutely relate to this rationale.

Well she is a teenager. I think most are yes, self absorbed. You can think the world revolves around you and everyone is talking about you.
But we all have the moment when we realise no one really is because, they are busy being just as paranoid and self involved.
Friends are the only ones who notice anything, and they will be the one's to funk you over in the end... So who cares what they think.
So kids have fun, don't be afraid to act the fool. No one will really notice or remember.

I'll agree that she is selfish but I find her to be a pretty accurate portrayal of teenaged girls.

How is that unrealistic? Most teenage girls I know are more preoccupied by who their favorite character on tv is going to sleep with than by any event in the world around them. They're so self involved, it's hard to believe they even know there is a world around them. Most of the time they don't.

I'm just going to assume the OP is not female and has never had a friendship of any kind or relationship of any kind or any family who is or has ever been a teenage girl.

This absolutely WAS realistic. I'm not saying it is right or reasonable. But realistic...yes.

And anyway a gun went off, no one was hurt. If someone had been injured or died then I'm sure she wouldn't have been *quite* so preoccupied.

One of the big points of the actual show...is to show that through Angela...most teenagers don't see how lucky they are! So during the show you see that Angela is a normal everyday girl! She's pretty but not too pretty to intimidate and she's not under pretty that she goes unnoticed-but she thinks shes ugly! She's thin but doesn't have a models body and is not fat in anyway-but feels fat! She's smart but not too smart to be a nerd, she gets by with normal grades that will secure her a good college but she's not dumb in anyway-she thinks she's stupid! She has a nice home in a safe, middle class neighbourhood with great parents who love her, look after her and give her everything she needs but not everything she wants so she can learn values in life. And she has a really cool younger sister who adores her and yearns for her approval, yet Angela takes her for granted-she thinks her family are lame and embarrassing. She has a long time friend in Sharon but turned her away for friends that will make her rebel from ordinary life so that she can feel alive-she thinks her life is boring. And even though she caught the attention of the most popular boy in school who actually likes her for HER, for who she is...she still feels she doesn't deserve him! That's the point of the show in a lot of ways...we can see all the good things Angela has but it won't be until she's older that she will look back and take notice of how good she had life! That's why she's selfish...she's a teenager!
