Are Chandler and Monica a good couple?

thougts?

I like the idea of them together, but the problem is that the personality traits of the characters became exaggerated in the seasons after they got together. Everyone seemed to bring out the worst in one another.

This!

Yes. I think they're very realistic. They're both full of neurosis, could never make a relationship work, and in the end because they were good friends and the sex was good, they literally just settled for each other.

reply

Not believable, Richard was better and more believable.

reply

YES...MY FAVORITE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SERIES.

reply

meh. are any of these Losers good couples?

no, but as they say, whatever works..

reply

NO. Terrible couple. It was fun at first because they were hiding their relationship and there were several great episodes but, as a couple, they were terrible. Chandler, the poor guy, ends up with Monica? I would rather have Janice than Monica.

MONICA IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST SITCOM LADIES OF ALL TIME.

reply

She was hot for a few episodes, I think in season 3.

reply

No. Ruined Chandler’s character, he was so much better as a singleton. Those first four seasons were pure gold then things started going downhill and a big part of that was Mondler.

She was much better off with Richard. All the characters were good and Monica was the hottest but also the most meh, but there were fireworks whenever she and Richard were together.

It was a fun, unexpected gag to have Chandler and Monica sleep together and maybe if they’d become a couple right near the end, like Season 9, after they’d really milked Perry’s comic genius being with various weirdos, it could have worked.

But hey, a small blot on what was an otherwise incredible show which reminds everyone of a better time.

Edit: I’ve since watched the reunion and the writers confirmed that Mondler was always supposed to be a fling, just as I intuited, but the whooping from the audience when they first appeared in bed was so epic that they decided to take it the whole way. Damn.

1 The question is if they were a good couple. Clearly, they made a great couple.

2 It is unfortunately true that he was a different character, and so was she. As single they were funnier and not annoying, while their stories as a couple where a bit boring and mundane.

reply

1. ‘Clearly’ they didn’t. Was it Joey-Rachel bad? No, they were a meh couple at best, and it was too costly a move to make given how much better Chandler was as a singleton and Monica was with Richard.

2. Correct.

Do you know what a good couple even is?

They loved each other, supported each other, had fun with each other, the best sex in their lives, had similar interests and projects. What else do you expect to find in a couple?

In REAL LIFE there is always a give and take when you become a couple.
Chandler and Monica changed a bit, for the worse of our entertainment, but they clearly IMPROVED their fictional lifes a great deal: they finally had a great love interest, reliable, faithful, loving, etc, they found a goal in life and had direction and belonging.
CLEARLY they made a great couple.

I found them to be an awkward fit, and it robbed the series of single-Chandler which is the best Chandler.

All those things you speculate that make a good relationship mean nothing next to maximising the entertainment value of the show. They can have all that stuff in Season 9 once they’d milked the single-Chandler cow and the Monica-Richard cow.
