Hope vs. ER

I know when they both first came out, everyone (including myself) was puzzled why 2 medical shows would go head to head in the same timeslot. That obviously didn't last long.

Now, I won't deny ER is a top notch show, even now, however I would contend that in the first season of both shows, Hope was better. Mandy Patakin is just an incredible actor, and the ensemble cast was terrific in year 1. Unfortunately, after Mandy left, ER jumped far ahead, and when Mandy came back in '99, it was too late.

I enjoy both shows. I was six when they came out so kind of grew up watching them on and off and have since gone back and watched ER from the beginning to end (i own every season on dvd) and have recently downloaded all six seasons of Chicago Hope since they are not available on dvd.

I'm watching them now and although i enjoy both shows for me ER is by far superior. I find it less soap opera like and more realistic than Chicago Hope and i think the characters are a little better. I like that it's mainly about emergency situations. In saying that i still fell in love with and got attached to the characters, whereas i havent yet with Chicago Hope, although im still on the 1st season.

I feel Chicago Hope was the Greys Anatomy of the 90's - more about relationships, love and surgeons etc and ER cannot be compared to anything else. It is by far the best medical drama ever made.

Revenge is a poison. Revenge is fit only for fools and madmen.

I liked the characters of Chicago Hope better. I feel ER stayed on about 4-5 years too long.

E.R...I appreciate the effort of CBS prompting the show for 6 long seasons though.

Hope was a poor man’s ER.
