Insultingly one sided...

I understand this story was taken from Tinas biography, but NO relationship is so one sidedly at fault..

This makes Tina look like an angel and Ike like satan himself...

nobody is THAT innocent...

witnesses that were there say the fights were mutual, Tina got in her licks against Ike too... that BOTH wound up with bruises... Ike definitely WAS an *beep* in real life, but this show was insultingly biased...

it might be good fiction, but the truth is NEVER this one sided...

I had a similar thought as I was watching the film. I'm sure Ike was a low down son of a bitch, but you can't truly understand him without a deep exploration of his life story. This film fails to grasp that. The scene at the end when he walks in with the gun was just laughable and cartoonish. Come on, was he really that corny?

Another point in Ike's defense, I think Tina's music was much better when those two were together.

Okay, there I've said it. Feminists have at me.

reply

Unfortunately, when Tina wrote her book there was no sense of both parties not physically harming the other. Even when this came it there was still an overwhelming notion that no matter what a woman does, the man should never put his hands on her. Therefore, Tina's part in it would mean absolutely nothing to most people at the time she put it out there.

As for cartoonish, I wonder if it went over well at the time because it was the early 90's?

reply

But OP, the movie did show her fighting back verbally and physically. Especially the fight they had in the limo. Honestly i think she was looking for a way to start a fight when she started calling for a taxi right in front of him.

"Okay, there I've said it. Feminists have at me."

As you can see, no "feminists" have come at you. It's a shame that there are still such negative stereotypes about feminism - it just means to believe in gender equality, not a battle between men and women, or being pro-women in a one-sided and simplistic way. It's entirely possible to be a feminist and agree with the points you made here.

reply

Damn, did I really say that?

You'll have to pardon me. I was hitting the bottle a lot in those days.

reply

that's exactly what feminism is

Nope.

Yes, LOL, but that's the scene people always reenact. Synclaire and Overton did it in 'Living Single.' I remember Synclaire saying, "Those people out there came to see me, Ike. Whatcha gonna do, shoot me?

Ike.......is that you? Only Ike would be insulted....

That scene with the gun never happened. The studio rape scene also never happened.

This is sad to have thought of this movie as gospel as far as being true. These damn movie writers, producers, ect. will sell their own mothers up the river to sell tickets.

They had to dramatize the movie to keep people interested. Much of it is exaggerated. Jackie wasn’t a real person and didn’t introduce her to Buddhism. Tina was sleeping with Ike’s bandmates and had a child by one, but in the movie they him Ike’s biological son. The rape scene was fictional and both her and Ike denied it. It all comes together if you read their books and watch interviews of them and people who were close to them.

People will talk about how Ike would punch or kick Tina one day and she’d be beating him with her shoes and pouncing on him the next. They were a hot mess of a couple and the introduction of fame and drugs did nothing to help.

1. The theater scene doesn't have to be taken literally, although Ike did make dangerous attempts to get her back after the divorce and his threats of bodily harm prompted Tina to buy a gun to defend herself. Even taken literally, the scene is artistic license that nevertheless portrays the reality of Tina's situation. If taken metaphorically, the scene merely signifies that Tina is ready to move on and not allow herself to be haunted by Ike's memory. Remember when he points to his head and says "I'm in here"? The scene is begging to be viewed metaphorically.

2. Ike did rape her. Does it matter whether it happened in a studio or in their bedroom? Ike was an abusive pig and the movie presents him as such.

I'm going to tell you like I told my assualter "no one feels sorry for a man that hits a woman." The fact that he hit her alone he deserved any infamy he got. Now to be fair if she is bigger than you, coming at you with a weapon or you two are a match strength wise and she's hitting you, okay but it's clear he was stronger than her and he beat her unprovoked more than once.

Well said, kitty! There are many people who've backed up Tina's accounts for years. Ike didn't just attack Tina. He attacked anyone he thought was disrespecting him.

Though the rape in the studio might not have happened, Ike did rape her after the first time he beat her. According to Tina after Ike beat her over the head with a wooden shoe stretcher, he told her to get in bed and got on top of her. I bet it wasn't the last time either.

Don't eva let nobody tell you you ain't strong enough

You know Ike Turner's Unsung episode is coming up soon on TVOne, I think they said June 3rd. I'm curious about what it says about the whole thing.

"That was the sickest thing I've seen on TV, and I watch Dance Moms"

Of course Tina and Ike would say the rape never happened. Who in their right mind would say to the media "Oh yeah, he raped me" or "Yep, I sure did rape her. Was doing a lot of cocaine." Rape would send him to prison, and Tina into constant court hearings. No celebrity admits that, but we all know it probably happened- multiple times.

reply

So if a person denies they are raped, they're just lying? Who is to be believed then? The scriptwriters who made it up or some unknown fan who makes it up?

The movie portrayed Ike as an older man preying on innocent teen Tina but Tina was a teenaged mother before she met Ike. Tina even told Oprah that her and her sister used to follow Ike all around St. Louis. They were basically groupies. I don't understand why Hollywood has to lie in movies that are supposed to be truthful. Don't say its a biopic when half of it is false.

reply

Ike may be a good musician but he was an utter failure as a man and a decent human being.

reply

Honey, they should have carved that on his tombstone!

Nobody ever said Tina was a saint, but nobody ever said she was an abusive psycho with an impressive police record, who terrorized people she claimed to love, either.

reply

Ike Turner grew up in a racist society which shaped and molded him the way he turned out. He used violence growing up to earn respect and keep people off his back. If he hadn't used "heavy-handed" tactics like this, he never would've gotten as far as he did. I don't agree with what he did to Tina, but all of this occurred during a time period when it was basically unheard of for a black person to be thought of as a normal human being, let alone being seen as deserving of celebrity status. He dealt with a lot of trash people trying to ruin him at every turn. It screwed him up mentally but he still made it in the end, changing the face of blues music in the U.S. That alone redeems him of everything he did wrong.

reply

Honey, the secret of a good troll post is to make it ever so slightly plausible.

reply

that's as plausible as it gets. Atleast as theories go anyway when it comes to determinants of anti social behavior

reply

"That alone redeems him of everything he did wrong."

No, it doesn't, scumbag. Do you forgive every great artist that was an abusive rapist?

reply

Otter, thank you. Ike dished it out, and had much more upper-body strength than Tina, which makes him a bully and a coward (to make a false distinction). I had a girlfriend who had a girlfriend who slept with Ike when Ike and Tina were in Boston. She told me that her friend told her that she and Ike were doing Tne Nasty in The Back Bay Hilton Hotel when the door burst open and Tina strode into the suite! She smacked the toadstools out of Ike, and then turned to my girlfriend’s girlfriend, and said, “And you! You be careful who you’re sleeping with.” And then Tina walked out of the suite.

There is no reason, EVER, for a man to raise his hand against a woman, I don’t care if she’s Cynthia Rothrock, Pam Grier or Michelle Yeoh. The so-called “man” who does that is a bully
and a coward. My point is that
there are ladies who can fend for themselves in such situations. Tina Turner, instense as Bruce Lee, fluid and inconquerable water, was one.

Seeing all the victim-blaming on this thread is DISGUSTING. This is why the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements are necessary.

reply

Apparently the incident with the rape and gun never happened. Even Tina said the film wasn't accurate.
