fat people so shocking!?

were they that rare in 1993 america? surly its a regular sight these days?

reply

I think it was more shocking because being a small town, everyone knew everyone else and grew up with each other. So to see someone who they knew from the past and to see how far she let herself go, I think that was the shocking part. If an out-of-towner stopped by and they were that heavy, I don't think people would have stared as much... or atleast I hope not!

I think it was the EXTREME of it, being overweight is now VERY common but most overweight people are lanky compared to her, she was such an extreme. I am curious how much the actress weighed? I am very overweight and I am five foot nine and weigh 270. I hope she weighed more than 270 because I would hate to be that fat!

Oh and by the way had I been her son (Portrayed by Johnny Depp) I would have grabbed the camera out of the hand of the man who took a photo of my mother when she was on her way to the police station and smashed it.

I do know that the world's fattest people cannot get through doorways and she COULD also the fattest people cannot walk at all and this woman even managed to go up a flight of stairs but the effort was so exhausting it killed her.

I think she was much thinner than the supposed world's record of 1600 pounds (estimated).

I am guessing eight hundred pounds which is half the size of the world's record, but its just my best guess I have no way of knowing for sure.

She was around five-hundred pounds (pretty sure I read that somewhere!) and 1600 lbs is the world record? That's insane!

The actress only went up one or two stairs during the filming they just made it seem like she climbed the whole stairs.

reply

knowing her all her life, they should have been used to it.

Well, it is a small town. Heck, they throw a parade for a Burger Barn. Plus, Mamma Grape is a recluse. People in town know of her and her condition but never see her, except for a few curious children who peek in windows.

still dont think it would be such a big deal these days...

reply

I do think it was less common back then, but I don't know that people would have gone around taking pictures or peeping in the house of a person with morbid obesity.

reply

Morbidly obese people weren't so common then and were seen as oddities. Last year on another site, someone posted pictures of malls across America circa 1990 and apart from the indoor smoking and wretched '80s clothing/style that was still in vogue, hardly any fat/obese people. I was surprised 'cause that was only 20 years ago, but now you can go to your local Wal-Mart and see obese people in walkers or little scooters. I was a kid in the '80s and I remember the occasional fat kid. In fact, every grade had the fat kid. But nowadays they seem to be everywhere. I went with my 11-year-old niece for the first day of school and I saw kids who even if they still had slim frames, they had guts and muffin tops and full faces. It's sad.

Part of the "shock" of her was probably because she was such a recluse, so the townsfolk rarely saw her and there was so much gossip about her. Such an extreme degree of obesity is more common these days, but there are still plenty of TV specials about large people, so the interest is obviously still there.

As a slim person myself, I find documentaries on obese people interesting. I think it's human nature to be curious about people who are extreme in any way (giants, dwarfs, obese, medical anomalies, etc).

Lol i know right, a fat person in america? Get out!

They definitely couldn't remake this film set in this era!

Ashmi any question

I think it's more or less that she was an enigma to the townsfolk. Back in the 90s as a kid, there was this guy who was gay and lived with an old man and they were very eccentric and different. Now, it's not so weird, but then it was strange. We used to walk by the house to see if the guy was going his gymnastics or whatever and jumping on his trampoline.

reply

But it was very exaggerated in this movie. I'm sure people would have stared, but I don't think they would have followed her and congregated outside of buildings just to watch her and take pictures like it is in the movie.
