If this is not the greatest marriage of image + music tell me what is?

That amazing orchestral montage at the end. In terms of music, colour, arrangement, lighting, metaphor, expression, symbolism and pure style I don't think it will ever be beaten. Its such a powerful, emotional and devestating 5 minutes of cinema.

Thank you for mentioning that scene from Barry Lyndon. In my opinion it's one of the strongest yet subtlest seduction scenes every filmed, and the way the music and the movement of their eyes convey the feelings of the characters is absolutely brilliant in it's simplicity.

One of my other favourites is the opening sequence of Apocalypse Now Redux, with the dissolves between the jungle bombings, helicopters, and Willard in his confusion. Also many moments in Wong Kar Wei's films, but especially in In The Mood For Love when Maggie Cheung passes Tony Leung as she is on her way to buy noodles.

The final duel in Once Upon a Time in the West.

The Final duel in 'OUATITW'

Close, very close and I love it, but it doesn't contain the depth, poetry and symbolism of the closing sequence in 'Blue'

The WHOLE film was the greatest marriage of image and music!

Definitely an amazing case of image and music flowing together, I agree.

Others I would include:

1. The New World
2. The Red Shoes

and then,
The Tree of Life
Amadeus
2001: A Space Odyssey
Barry Lyndon
The Shining
Once Upon a Time in America
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Raging Bull

of course, this is just orchestral music

I would also include Lars Von Trier's Europa (1991) Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line (1998)

-Only around people

The finale is beautiful, but several scenes in Kieslowski's previous film Double Life of Veronique come close. My personal favorite, however, would be Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire.

The epic Bloater scene in (Billingsgate - The Director's Cut) with the soundtrack of Tuvanian throat music is quite remarkable.

you should check Un coeur en hiver (A Heart in Winter), also in French. Fell in love with Ravel since this.

I think the whole ending sequence of Zerkalo/The Mirror takes the cake.

The New World is also a great call.
