Oddly enough knowing he was going to die in a work camp the same as his father didn't make me laugh but I'm odd like that.

My sense of humor must be off, too.

I hope nobody else agrees.

No, I didn't. I guess I was too engrossed in the story, and found the scene incredibly sad. While this movie was fictional "Swing youths" were very real. Many were sent to camps and died, along with the jews.

If you're wondering "Am I a bad person for laughing at this?"... kind of.

Try to get that inner 10 year old of yours under control and learn to have some empathy for those that came before you.

"It's so simple a six year old could figure it out."
"Quick! Someone get a six year old!"

Word! Makes you really appreciate the right to express yourself - something the Swing Kids and the guy in Tiananmen Square didn't have.

People protest all kinds of things in the US all the time, but they don't have to worry about being tortured and/or killed for doing so.

I don't think it was funny and didn't laugh (just watched the clip again on Youtube after many years), but when the kid screams I do hear puberty.

reply

No, I didn't find it the least bit funny.

It's typical of a younger brother to want to be like his older brother, so it makes sense. He's worried about his brother and what's going to happen to him, and he emulates him as a show of support.

Anyone who thinks that ending is funny is missing some real compassion and empathy.

I don't think anyone's saying that the situation is funny, but just that the direction and writing was hilariously bad.

I just rewatched this movie for the first time in years, and actually started laughing way before Willie picks up the umbrella. The thing that really got me was the part where Thomas watches Peter being dragged off to the truck. Obviously the situation itself is horrifying-- Thomas is watching his friend being forcibly taken to his death (most likely), knowing full well that he played some role in it. Truly horrible stuff; I think (and hope) that no one denies that. But man, the direction was atrocious in that scene, between the slow-mo and the insanely cheesy background music. A situation as desperate and haunting as that one doesn't and shouldn't need to rely on those gimmicks, and yet they're there, turning what should have been a powerful scene into an absolute corn-fest.
