Honestly. What did you expect them to do?

I've never understood the hate for this one. Did people really think they could make a live action Mario movie? You'd end up with Tim Burtons Alice in wonderland. CGI mess. Obviously making a bizzare LSD soaked Mario movie would be completely unfilmible. Idk why I have to explain this πŸ˜ͺ

So I have to say the weird cyberpunkesue direction they went is in my opinion to me the only way the movie could have possibly made sense.

If the source material can't be made into a movie, then they should have not made it at all

Well, Sonic the Hedgehog seemed even less movie friendly, yet here we are.

I for one am glad they gave us the real illuminati message behind the Super Mario Bros franchise instead of some little kiddy crap.

Not in 1993, you wouldn't have. The technology wasn't there yet. If they did a live action Mario movie in the early 90s that was faithful to the video games, it would probably involve a LOT of animatronics and work from "Jim Henson's creature shop" (making Piranha Plants and so on) to make it work.

I think would have been "filmible" with that approach, but it would have required a HUGE budget.

They were able to create sci-fi/fantasy worlds in 1980s movies like Legend, Krull, Baron Munchausen, or Dune and of course, the Star Wars OT. This could had been accomplished but it would had been very expensive.

Actually, the shooting script that the actors all signed on for was an ALOT closer to the games and billed as a Fantasy film closer in tone to "the princess bride". As soon as the ''directors'' were hired they started changing the script daily leading to what we have now...
