I absolutely love this movie. It is an all time favorite

I think I am the only one I have ever heard of loving this movie. I am a huge fan of the video game series but I was never annnoyed or offended that the movie had nothing to do with the game. Iove the atmosphere of the movie, the costumes, the props, the robots (for lack of better term because I am very tired at he moment!), the story, the script. I love every single thing about it. Does anybody out there share my love for this movie? I had always assumed it was a well loved cult classic until a couple of years ago when I found out how despised it truely is.

Your ignorance is not that big of deal.

I love this movie, too. It's a bad movie, but I was born in '91, so there's great nostalgia here. It also started the development of a strong appreciation for Dennis Hopper as I grew up.

I was eight when this came out - and I was a Nintendo/Mario fan. I loved this movie, and it still holds a special place in my heart today.

The reason? It was the first movie I saw that introduced me to the concepts of dystopian future and alternative dimensions. These are two of my favorite themes of all time. It blew my eight-year-old mind. It was totally unique and new, and to this day there aren't many movies or stories for kids that are very similar.

I also don't understand why so many people are upset with the liberties they took with the story. What does a faithful, literal adaptation of Mario look like anyway? It's kind of a terrible story on its own - does anyone really put THAT much stock in the ever-so-exciting story of Mario going castle to castle in attempts to rescue a kidnapped princess? Boring.

I find it hilarious a lot of people laying into this movie were infants or not even born when it came out. People who want to hate on a movie that was designed for children and created before they were even born will never understand what they missed out on, they don't have the capacity to.

LOVE this response!
I totally agree with everything. I was 12 when it came out and while I had already been exposed to those themes you mentioned, this movie still gave us a really neat world and concept to explore. The video game as a movie would have been really dumb. What would it be? Just two guys running from left to right, jumping on Turtles and knocking coins out of bricks? The movie was the same as the games in terms of the basic plot: princess kidnapped, brother save her. Everything else was just creative, and frankly, far more creative than any of the horrible superhero movies being churned out by the month these days.

This may be getting a little too deep into the weeds, but I've always enjoyed pretending that the movie was the "original event" that the games (SMB really) were retelling. The games, on the other hand, would be the simplified doctrine or folklore of the event that is being retold in game form in the alternate dimension hundreds of years later. A lot of folklore is based on true events and real people, but take creative liberties while preserving the essence of the story. For instance, a folk tale character could be based on a real person, even though the character is an animal (Big Bertha doesn't have to be a fish in reality). It's fun to pretend the game is an artifact that slipped through the cracks of time and space.

I think most people wanted a Mario film that works within the context of the game. Instead, we got a film that provided NEW context FOR the game. The games are truly bizarre on their own, with or without any context. The movie actually brought the games down to reality, but not just any reality, a truly creative and interesting new sci-fi dystopian reality. Then it connected it to our own world using alternate dimension travel in the plot. That bad-ass sci-fi dystopian sentient-fungus filled overthrown monarchy bridges the gap between the reality we know, and the off-the-wall story/setting of the games.

This film inspired me to pretend I was playing historical/religious doctrine/folklore from a future alternate dimension. How many video game movies can inspire the imagination of a kid's mind like that? That's some far out *beep*!

That's an interesting way to look at it. I personally just look at it like there was never a Super Mario Bros. video game, and that it's its own story. I loved the world it created, the acting is top notch, and it has great special effects that stand the test of time. Who else thinks Iggy and Spike are the funniest dimwitted(for a time)duo ever?

There's a growing cult fanbase for this movie, and the site includes many references to the games people missed/are hard to see but are there.

I too enjoy this film. It's not a great film, a movie classic, but it IS extremely fun as a cheesy film.

And after having seen Final Fantasy Advent Children, Tekken Blood Vengeance, Yakuza, Bloodrayne 2, Alone in the Dark, Press Start, Video Game High School to name but a few - all of which are far worse than this movie, you begin to see it in a different light. It's not accurate, its poorly written and directed, but its fun.

Not as good as Ghost Recon Alpha, Mortal Kombat Legacy, Indie Game the Movie or Hitman.

90s knew how to make good cheese :D This, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat... All inaccurate and stupid but so sooo fun.

There is a growing cult fanbase for this movie, as well as screenings across America of the film. As 'despised' as it appears to be it brings interest and fans. Most people who shout hate Gor it actually haven't seen it, and go by what is said - this is proven when they mention Yakuza will be a good film cos its Japanese - got it on Blu-Ray, and it sucks and I'm a massive Yakuza fan.

This is a great movie for fun, but I can see why its unloved - you couldn't really call it an important cinema classic.

I love this movie. It's so awesome! It always visually reminded me of Blade Runner as well and then years later I found out that Blade Runner and Super Mario Bros shared the same lead art designer.

I always loved it as a kid but I can certainly notice it's flaws nowadays. Still chock full of nostalgia though 6/10.
