Personally I'm a rather big fan of modern music. Not the pop kind whatsoever, but heavy metal. Some recent metal sub-genres such as progressive metal, mostly the kind incorporating death metal elements, are quickly becoming my favorites. Gojira are fantastic, I think, and so are Opeth (although they've been around since like '93). I also like Cynic, but they are more jazzy metal, especially with their currently-latest album 'Traced In Air' -- something I'd recommend to even non-metal fans! Brilliant, complex song-writing, definitely on par with Porcupine Tree and the like in those terms. Although I'd definitely rather draw some similarities between Opeth and Porcupine Tree, rather than Porcupine Tree and Cynic. While Opeth has death metal elements (such as growling and overall heaviness) and Porcupine Tree are just rock, they're of that same type (yeah, progressive); unusual song structures, odd time signatures, and all of that. Opeth do have some rock mixed in with the death metal, though. And even a lot of songs with complete absence of the latter.

Even so, just as a little FYI, there's A LOT of rock and metal bands out there today that are NOT metalcore (the genre Killswitch Engage and Hatebreed are of). You just need to dig through all of that crap. You should find a lot of different music under there.

Really, all one needs to do is to look beyond the mainstream. For me, such will never appeal. They all just try to sound the same as formerly successful music groups. There's very little originality, I think. They're afraid of trying something new. It's like they've decided from the start that "we shall be pop". No innovation.



Not that any of this is relevant. He wasn't saying modern anime is bad; he was saying he outgrew the anime he used to like. So if anything, we should be discussing old music now.

Yeah, I'm 20 and I still like them both. Very basic plot but still a fun ride. It's better though the first time you see them. I also like shows with good plot and action together like Naruto (minus the awful filler) and Full Metal Alchemist.

on the nose sir. Newer stuff just doesn't nearly have the same "umph" as older anime. I watched Ninja Scroll the other day and it still is just a fun watch to say the least. To be honest, it's a neat tale of how all these factions of ninjas are plotting against each other and other espionage. There is some plot I missed as a kid when I watched it the other day too.

Ninja Scroll is important as much as a Studio Ghibli movie. The amount of detail given to the fantastic animation is really almost art in motion. Ghibli movies fantastic, so don't get me wrong. Though, I feel like it's the only thing that gets praise from Japan in terms of animation. Ninja Scroll is deff. for adults. There is no question about that. The scope of the adventure is quite on par with that of a Ghibli film.

Also, anything Kawajiri does is just gold. He treats the medium as an intense movie that no one has tried to make before.

All: Why is everyone comparing this film to Ghibli's output? Kawajiri's directing style is WORLDS away from Miyazaki, Oshii, Kon, or any of the "serious" anime directors. Other than being animated and in Japanese, this has nothing in common with the likes of Spirited Away or Millennium Actress, and was not meant to be enjoyed in the same way, or even by the same people. I love Ninja Scroll, but it isn't high art; its exploitation at its finest, with a gauntlet of crazy villians and an insane plot device hinging on the main characters having sex (or not). I mean, you wouldn't compare a a film like Desperado to something like 12 Angry Men, would you? Both are great films, but screws go in one drawer and nails in the other.

Well, that depends on what genre you´re looking for. "Grave of the Fireflies" is a very sentimental and touching movie. "Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust" has visually beautiful action scenes as well as an emotional story. The "Death Note" series is one of the most brilliant things to come out in th anime world, although you won´t it in a video store since it´s new. The "Samurai Deeper Kuy" series combines action and humour and is quite entertaining... well, it gets to complicated in the later episodes, but still worth it.

It´s better if you tell what genre you are most interested in, I can give you better and more concrete examples then.
