Better picks for Gaunt

Dont get me wrong this was a pretty good steven King film, I just thought that
Max Von Sydrow's perforance as Leland Gaunt wasn't sinster/evil enough. I have a
list of actors that could play Gaunt alittle better

1. Anthony Hopkins
2. John Malkovich
3. Gary Oldman
4. David Carridine
5. Sean Connery
6. Jack Nicholson

Anyone agree with this?

Tobin Bell, hands down!

Also possible could be Michael Emerson.

Whoa, this is just like Speed 2, except with a bus instead of a boat!

reply

Reading the book, I saw Gaunt as sometimes Ed Begley, Jr, sometimes Ed Harris.

Max Von Sydow is a LEGEND - I won't hear a word said against him!

I thought Max von Sydow was perfect as Leland Gaunt and frankly made the movie. Though, I agree Ian McKellen would also have been potentially great. I often think the two actors tend to excel in similar roles.

I do like Max Von Sydow's performance in this film. He's effective, I think.

I recently reread the novel. Ever since I saw the movie, MVS was always who my mind pictured in the role. This time, when I read the novel, MVS was replaced by another face....

If they were going to remake this, and have it follow the novel's storyline more closely, the actor I imagined while reading the novel this latest time was Timothy Dalton.

Dalton could easily portray the slick side of Leland Gaunt. A less cartoon version of his turn as Simon Skinner in "Hot Fuzz" would work wonders. But Dalton is also extremely volatile when he wants to be. Something that would be ideal for certain parts, especially when Gaunt freaks on Ace Merrill for wanting to go after Pangborn instead of doing what Gaunt instructs. Can you imagine Enraged TD in that scene? I certainly could.

McKellen and Hopkins are nice choices also, but, to me, the actor that brings it all to the table is Dalton.

I love to love my Lisa.

your picks are awesome i read the novel and always envisioned Donald Sutherland
as Gaunt and always pictured someone like Liam Neeson playing Alan Pangborn

when I was reading the book (I've yet to see the movie, I actually stumbled upon it today looking at Max von Sydow's movie list), I kept having the image of Alex Diakun in my head.

Google his name and look at some pictures.

I think Max von Sydow was perfect, because the devil is no more devilish when he appears to be not so evil. The most evil people actually look the most normal.

I thought Max Von Sidow was perfect.

You've got to remember Gaunt also had sort of a suave grandfatherly old-world charm, no one except maybe Anthony Hopkins or Sean Connery could pull that off from your list, maybe Malkovich - but really the best person was Von Sidow.

What hump?

I don't think anyone could have been better though but here are some of my picks who could have done as well

Javier Bardem (he talks so smooth)
Frank Langella (he did the 9th gate well)
Sean Bean (for a younger guy)
