What if Max lit the black candle on any other night besides Halloween?
Would the Sandersons have still come back since Max is a virgin and what? I thought about what Allison told him in class that Halloween is based off the ancient feast called All Hallows Eve. It according to Allison, is the one night in the year that the spirits of the dead can return to earth.
Maybe I taking this a tad bit too literally, but the Sanderson sisters are technically already dead when they show up in 1993. And it's awfully coincidental that they return on Halloween night of all nights of the year.
