I'd agree that he did it out of boredom rather than for the money.
Anything he purchased with the stolen money would only last him a day anyway. I mean, I guess he could walk into a car show room, buy an expensive car with cash, then drive around for a bit. But other than that, what else could he really do with it? It's not like he could buy a house in a day and, there'd be no point buying a holiday in advance. Or getting an expensive watch or clothing that he could wear for one whole day.
I mean, I guess he could go to a local bar and start throwing his money round and be drinking champagne, or whatever. But, you could argue he could do that anyway. Next morning he'd have his money back in his account like he never spent it. He might as well just do that rather than steal.
Really, there's no real point in stealing the money, other than to alleviate the boredom he's feeling. Which I assume was the point.
