Guilty Pleasure

I happened to like Sleepwalkers. Stephen King created some bizarre and unique creatures based on vampire mythology and set them loose on a dreamy, picturesque little town in the heartland of America for the sake of tearing it to shreds. The mother and son relationship was sadistically erotic because they had such fierce sexual chemistry, yet on the other hand it was disturbing to watch the incest take place.

The story isn't frightening...it's more like scary fun thanks to the ghoulish effects and over the top cheesiness during certain parts. It was wise for director Mick Garris to stray from making this into a serious film because the material it's based on isn't. And for that reason alone, I think Sleepwalkers succeeds in the end.

i agree with ur comments. its one of my fave guilty pleasure movies, i used to watch this movie all the time when i was 12, i just could not get enough, ah the things we love when we're kids eh lol. i still like it as an adult but not nearly as much, i mean i saw it on the big screen and i loved the music and how they looked. i actually had tried some prequel type fan fics back then, when i was a kid.

I love stephen king's choice of music in his movies, when I was a kid my favorite song was the Ritchie Valens song, whenever I hear that song I just think of this movie. This is my favorite movie of all time when it first came out on video it instantly became my favorite movie, I guess because as a child my mother would make me turn away at the sex scenes and gore/killings scenes. In this movie I saw that in a reflection in a window images stuck in my head, and I remember growing older and talking about this movie to friends. I usually hate horror movies and this is a movie i'll see once or twice a year and then see it again the next year cuz u dont want to repeat it over and over like a Linkin Park song. Eventually you'll get tired of it. Yes the movie isn't frightening now but as a child it will *beep* you up.

Yes a guilty pleasure, and Krause has some funny one liners, especially when he reveals his true self to the girl.

This is the kind of movies that I loved watching in the 80's and 90's were cheap, cheesy, and tacky horror films!

Maybe one day we'll end up with a Directors Cut of the film with additional footage that has a re-edited graveyard scene.

That does not sound like a bad idea at all guy! Sounds good to me. Possibly that might happen one of these days.

"Cop Kebab!"

Poor Madchen!

I love that film. I originally watched it by mistake as the tape had got in to the wrong video box at the shop. I much prefered it to the one I had intended to rent!

Music's stunning and I loved some of the cat stunts!

I agree. And Madchen is HOT in this movie. This is when I first noticed her. Anyway, I think this movie has to be seen a few times in order to be appreciated. At first you're caught off guard by the campiness, but then realize it's supposed to be over the top, camply, ridiculous, funny, crude, sick, and not serious drama. And the incest. I can see why some people would be put off right away, but if you think about it and their species, then it makes sense that they would find sustenance from each other. Their use of "mother" and "son" is not used in the same way humans use them. And all the cameos are quite interesting. The finished product is right for the material, hence all the non-actor cameos and campy dialogue. I don't think you'll ever find another movie with the likes of Perlman, Hamill, Landis, Barker, and King in one movie ever again. And Enya's music is a nice capper for this movie.

I also really enjoy this film. Personally as I have stated before, I think that if the graveyard scene were edited a little tighter to exclude the camp and cheese factor it would have worked a lot better. also, we could have done without the "Cop Kebab" line and corn on the cob stabbings. But if we would've included more exposition and backstory on the Sleepwalkers themselves, or possibly had them win/escape in the end I think this woul've been a classic film. I would disagree with the original post in that if director Mike Garris had gone the serious route he woul've ended up with an infinately better film. There was enough subtext and atmosphere there where I could sort of piece together a backstory, but I would've prefered if there woul've been more broad strokes. When Mary said that she could sense more Sleepwalkers out there and that they weren't the last, I seriously thought that they be saved by an army of Sleepwalkers converging on the house to help protect the last of their kind. I enjoy this film, but it could've been so much more.

Made all the more pleasurable by the lovely Alice Krige:

She gets me hot when she's acting evil and homicidal. Reminds me of her in "Ghost Story".

I love this movie too. I watch it around Halloween. I definitely don't agree with the other poster, if the kitty killers would have gotten away it wouldn't have been that good. It needed a good resolution.
