Better than Desperado?

I thought it was a much better put together tale and I felt for the characters more in this one.

I agree with you. I recently tried to rewatch Desperado and got bored. Other than Antonio Banderas being nice to look at I just wasn't engaged in the story.

I took El Mariachi out of the library b/c I hadn't seen it in so long and I wondered if I would still enjoy it. I remember being blown away by how good it was when I first saw it. It still is a great film.

I think that happens a lot with directors. Their first films, the low budget ones, they put all their heart into it. Then they get to Hollywood or some other big budget movie mecca and it all becomes flash and glitter. And it all becomes about the money.

No it is not better, but its still good.

It's very good, but much different from Desperado & Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Desperado is basically the myth of El Mariachi with some embellishments, OUATIM is basically the legend told with embellishments. All 3 are great though. Kick-ass trilogy!

Desperado's actually the weak link in the chain for me. Love EM and OUATIM for different reasons, but Desperado is just another film, apart from its brilliant first scene.

desperado is great. banderas and hayek at their highest sex appeal, action, story, acting, its all great. but mariachi is far and away better, i agree. i liked the writing better, and rodriguez's direction feels more energetic. you can tell that he made it on a shoestring budget, but that's what made it better. a lot of people say they like it better just because it was made cheaper, and thats not what im saying. im saying that because of that restriction, rodriguez's direction felt more alive, immediate, and energetic. he made desperado the same way, sort of...but he had more money and a safety net. with mariachi, he HAD to get it right the first time, and i think everybody working knowing that made it more energetic

definitely not. this movie just ain't as well made/shot and the overall cast just ain't as good as Desperado's. they did alter some stuff in Desperado vs this movie though but i think it was for the better overall.

bottom line...

-El mariachi (1992) = 6/10 (Thumbs Down. it's pretty average overall.)

-Desperado (1995) = 7.5-8/10 (Thumbs Up. this movie is memorable as it's between my 6th-8th favorite movie of 1995. also, this is definitely the directors (Robert Rodriguez) most memorable movie and Antonio Banderas most memorable movie (or damn close to it) to)

p.s. i just finished watching 'El mariachi' for the first (and only) time a moment ago.
