LOTM is one of my favorite movies. I think it captures that brief time in history when the American nation was primeval and raw and nature was fiercely a part of everyone's life - and had not been spoiled yet. It also portrays that spectacular nature of that part of the continent that just takes your breath away.
BUT, I have to say that LOTM is NOT a real acting movie. The plot is simple and basic. Maybe a different kind of acting in a physical or more animalistic way. Studi was really great as Magua a truly memorable character, as was the younger women whose name I cannot recall.
Best director I think, sure, definitely. The direction of that movie is so visceral and subliminal that you hardly notice it because it is so perfect. The soundtrack was also perfect.
I am not sure what it was up against in Best Picture, but LOTM surely deserved a nomination.
