Joe Jackson wasn't that bad

I don't know what he did to them growing up but according to this movie I didn't see anything that was so bad. If this is what the fuss was about then they are some really weak cry babies that need to man up. Micheal and Janet said that they didn't have it that bad but the others did. Micheal said that he was always used as the example. One of the older guys said that they were not abused and that they were punished like everyone else. One of the only parts that I didn't agree with was the "whoopin" that he gave Marlin for not getting the dance steps.
He work on a steel mill and still could hardly make ends meet. He didn't want that for his children. He had 9 children, 6 of them boys. Alot of men would have left but he stuck it out with his wife. It's hard enough to raise 1 blk male and keep them out of trouble, he had 6. The only one who has ever been in any real legal trouble was Micheal and he was found not guilty. I've never heard of any of them disrespecting their mother and to me, that one of the worst things you can do. You don't hear about them in the news selling drugs, robbing, or murdering people. They seemed to have grown into respectable people.

When I was a child I received "whoopins" as well and yes, they really hurt. My mom was alot worse than my dad was. We didn't get brutal beatings and it didn't happen often but they made their point. I can honestly say that looking back, I didn't get half the "whoopins" that I should have. I only got hit with switches (feeble tree limbs)or a belt. It hurt my feelings and my pride more than my body but I survived and I'm not a bad person. I know of people who got hit with extension cords. That's what I call abuse or like my mother said that she would sometimes get it while in the bath tub or with 4 or 5 switches at a time. She said she got hit with the first thing her mother could pick up.

I'm too old to be politically correct, I'm gone be real. Take it or leave it.

If you're basing how Joseph is on this film, then yeah, he doesn't seem so bad. But remember, this film was produced with the approval of the family. Some of the terrible things he did were glossed over.

I can understand those who say It was "the times" to excuse such discipline. However, I just can't give Joseph a pass. He was hardly a father. He was a failed musician who wanted his children to succeed, even when it meant having no childhood, especially for Michael. He didn't just push hard, he allowed them to perform late at night at completely seedy clubs. They aren't cash cows meant to support him and make him a success. Joe chose to have nine children, Just because he stayed doesn't mean he was actually present as a father should be.

I believe Michael when he said his mother would yell, "Joe, you're gonna kill him!" during beatings. That goes far beyond discipline of the times. And how can a father really make fun of a child or teen's physical appearance? Saying "you didn't get [that big nose] from me." What a guy!

Just days after Michael died (actually it may have been the next day), Joe was interviewed outside for an event, and he was too busy plugging his new artist from his label to give a *beep* that his son had died! He's just devoid of normal human decency or love for his children.

Not that I want to defend Joseph Jackson in any way. The man is a creep. But about his reaction after Michael's death, there are people who deal with grief by shutting off their emotions and living in denial. And maybe that could be an explanation for why he reacted like he did at the time, that won't make it look like he was too cold-hearted to mourn his son's death.

I think you nailed it. He had a hard time expressing his feelings and shut himself off the family. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't show it too the public, but grieved in his own way.

Jeffrey Dahmer was a prince too. A prince, I tell ya.
