It never really occurred to me what his dad or possibly both of his parents did for a living. At the very most, I figured they were just your typical upper middle class suburban family.
One article suggested that Peter's brother Rob (Uncle Rob to Kevin) was the wealthy one in the family and paid for the trip. They even quoted the conversation between Kevin's mother and the fake cop played by Joe Pesci:
