Judging by his looks and demeanor, we can either assume he inherited the money and just works a job to keep himself busy, or he owns a very successful business of some kind.
That's the only theory I can offer, considering they never fleshed out the dad much in the story. Peter McCallister was pretty much your average "cookie-cutter" dad, and the actor wasn't very good with the part either. He barely showed any emotions, had very few lines, and didn't get very heavily involved with his family beyond letting the wife do everything.
