That which is not yet, but ought to be, is more real than that which merely is.

Well, I think "Taxi Driver" is much better in terms of plot, depth and character development, but theres no denying that BL is a fantastic film.

I'm going to agree with the OP. I thought this was better than Taxi Driver, though I do like both. I felt Bad Lieutenant had a stronger message and theme than Taxi Driver.

You people are insane. Taxi Driver blows this out of the water.

no , sorry Taxi Driver was the best.

i agree with the original statement, bad lieutenant is better than taxi driver. definitely one of the greatest films ever made.

I like how people are saying they prefer Taxi Driver because it has a 'better plot'. Bad Lieutenant isn't really about plot. It's an exploration of theme and character; something T.D only pretends to be. It has an underlying logic to it certainly, but a lot of the scenes and edits feel jerky, and disconnected. And yes, this is entirely deliberate - it's structurally more complex than Taxi Driver. Even the 'points of view' are complex; while the film is obviously 'seen' through the Lieutenant's 'eyes', there are numerous perspective shifts throughout the film that compel us to reflect on the meaning of what we are seeing. Also, the final shot is loaded with questions, whereas Taxi Driver plays the whole 'is he insane' game and therefore feels more like an urban boogeyman story in 2009 than it presumably did in the 70's(even Schrader refers to the final scene with Travis implying that he is a 'ticking time bomb').

Watch out! Cause Travis Bickle could be lurking around a corner near you!!!

In terms of atmosphere, B.L heightened urban realism makes Taxi Driver feel overly stylised and mannered in comparison.

T.D is a good film, but it's more shallow than B.D on almost every possible level.

I even prefer 'Fingers' to 'Taxi Driver' nowadays.

No, Taxi Driver´s sublime - a superb aesthetic accomplishment as Bad Lieutenant may be, it never finds such hypnotic pacing and perfect rhythm Scorsese´s film has. And then there´s the Bernard Herrmann score that has no parallel in Ferrara´s opus and is beyond reproach entirely.

However, I don´t think Kind Of New York is notably, if at all, weaker than its 1990 rival Goodfellas.

I prefer Bad Lieutenant, I felt Taxi Driver was great up until the end, the ending was so anti climatic for me, would of been better if he had died.

There's no question to which is the best and that would be Taxi Driver. End of story.

I agree with one of the other users that taxi driver probably had a better plot and maybe deeper character development, but bad lieutenant really hit me deep emotionally and with relatability.
