6 seasons and 119 episodes??

Jesus. Would never have expected that

reply

Me neither

Given most shows traditionally had 22 episodes per season, 119 is actually 13 short of what was the norm.

reply

Well mainly I would t have expected a tv show based on Highlander to last that long

I think it was a little ahead of it's time. What I mean is that it came out a couple of years before the likes of Xena and Hercules with Kevin Sorbo. In my mind they are similar type shows and it did end before either of those. I get what you are saying that it's Highlander. I think it was better than any of the movies, Adrian Paul made the show. But yeah, it's weird how some shows last and some shows which are way better get cancelled right away.

The show was very well written for being sword and sorcery themed. It never ventured off into goofy land like Hercules and Xena. That's not meant to be an insult to either of those shows. They were fun for what they were, but neither one really took itself too seriously, and even when there were serious themes were presented it was offset with a good dose of comedy. Highlander was different from any sword and sorcery show that preceded it because it was set in the (then) present, but was able to jump around through time. So, at times it was more of a period piece than a show about swords. The people who worked in the casting department were also a part of its success as they cast celebrities, models, known actors, and musicians in cameo and reoccurring roles. In doing so, that would sometimes entice a person to watch the show that normally wouldn't be interested in a show dealing with swords. Since the show was well written (for the most part) some of those casual viewers would become regular viewers. I believe that that was how I began viewing it. I was flipping though the channels, and stopped on Roger Daltry from The Who. He had a reoccurring role on the show. I watched, and I ended up enjoying the show. I had heard about it prior, but I had no interest because I firmly believed that it would be terrible when compared to the original film... I was wrong. For the most it was just as good, and added a lot of new elements to the mythos.

I agree that it wasn't goofy like Xena, but in my memory they all had a similar look and feel to them. I might be wrong as I haven't seen any of them since the 90s.

reply

I don't think it's anything like Hercules or Xena. Both of those shows are total camp; Highlander feels more like a Quantum Leap or Early Edition type show but with sword play and more violence.

reply

I have never heard of Early Edition before. I just looked it up. The premise sounds interesting.

reply

It was one my favorites in the 1990s. I didn't even think of it as sci-fi back then, but it I don't know how else you'd classify it. It's just sci-fi of a lighter variety. I was a fan of Kyle Chandler from a prior show, so that's why I watched it, but it turned out to be really good. I rewatched it last year and it's still good.

reply

Maybe I was thinking of Forever Knight or Friday the 13th the series. They just had a similar look and feel, even if they were different types of shows.

I like the comparisons to Friday the 13th, Forever Knight, Early Edition and Quantum Leap

Not only were they roughly contemporary with each other, they all ran with an essentially supernatural premise imposed onto otherwise ordinary people, with a lot of each show's dynamic revolving around how ordinary people deal with extraordinary power.

They all had a similar premise in that regard, and at least for me held similar appeal for that reason

It was a fun show. My dad and I used to watch it together.

TV at that time was not what it is today, but for its era, it was certainly above-average entertainment, especially if you were into sword fighting, martial arts or cool mythology.

I have not seen it now in several years but I have fond memories of watching it growing up.

There was a short lived spinoff too. 22 episodes following Amanda, Duncan's on again off again Catwoman squeeze.

reply

Never liked her, and never watched that.

It wasn't a good show, the opening narrative was lame, the tone was lame, the acting was flat, the way it was shot looked cheesy, even the way that Elizabeth Gracen wore her hair was just terrible. The entire show was plain bad.

Were any of the writers/cast and crew from the original show brought over to work on it, or was it just a bunch of new people? I could be wrong, but it seems (upon viewing) that it was a bunch of know nothings and in addition had a fairly amateur film crew working on it.

It's a shame as if it had been good, it could have expanded upon the mythos a bit more and maybe we would have gotten more spin off shows.

Methos could have had a great show had the franchise gone that route instead.

reply

its really goofy what they did. they completely overhauled her character into an entirely different person, even her iconic striking appearance. she still wears her hair that way to this day so im assuming it was all the actress's idea.

reply

Yeah, it was odd. Elizabeth Gracen was a former Miss America (when the pageant still had relevance) so she was no slouch in the looks department. However, when she showed up on that show, she didn't look sexy at all.

I did notice that she still wears her hair like that. So, I (like you) always assumed that it was her idea too. I'm not going to lie, even THAT probably had something to do with the cancelation of the show. At least if she still looked mad hot, like she did in the Highlander series, a lot of guys probably would have watched her show just because of that. I'm not one of them, but I do know a lot of guys who do that.

I should be clear, she wasn't ugly with that short blond haircut, but she was nowhere near the stunner that she was when she had long hair. That's just my opinion though. Some people may disagree.

Wait till you watch Star Trek and 24 TV series. Lol.

I'm rewatching this, last time I saw it was when it forstcame out on TV and the 2nd ep was so off from the 1st ep. I had to check Imdb if the ep was mislabeled.
