Honestly don't remember watching a lot of these episodes when it first came. Almost the entire season is nothing but filler episodes.

Did Adrian Paul's contract expire and he just agreed to do a few appearances?

According to the wikipedia of the show: The producers were experimenting to look for a replacement to Duncan for the planned spin-off Highlander: The Raven.

I don't know if he was contractually obligated but i do recall reading that they wanted to continue the show but Paul decided he wanted to move on to other things.Unfortunately his career didn't really take off and Highlander remains the highlight.
